Malcolm Smith Makes His Pitch to Orthodox Voters for His Mayoral Campaign

Democratic State Senator Malcolm Smith, who is floating his name as a potential Republican mayoral candidate in 2013, says he’s reaching out to all communities to gather support for his mayoral campaign. And in an interview with Y0ssi Gestetner, he explained why he might have some particular appeal in the Orthodox Jewish community.

“I always boast about Yeshiva Darchei Torah, which is in the district that I represent,” Mr. Smith said of his support from Orthodox voters, mentioning the Jewish school in Far Rockaway. “More importantly, it’s the same values and interests that we share in the Orthodox community, and that is the job that I would have as mayor, … trying to help everybody and trying to help individuals who are in need and have a better life for them and their family.” Read More

Robert Mittman Loans Campaign $75,000

As the congressional campaign filings come rolling in today, here’s a fun one: Dr. Robert Mittman, a somewhat perplexing third tier candidate in the Democratic primary that features three top tier contenders, bet big on his own campaign by loaning it $75,000.

Previously, Mr. Mittman, who curiously did not return repeated phone calls from The Politicker at the start of his candidacy, had declined to file a required campaign finance report. Read More

Shelly Silver Might Have A Tea Party Opponent

Assembly Speaker Shelly Silver might not really be in any electoral trouble in his heavily Democratic district, but that doesn’t mean everyone thinks he should be unopposed. Accordingly, an individual named Wave Fay Chan filed against Mr. Silver today.

Congressional Candidate Stars in Occupy-Themed Hip-Hop Video

George Martinez, a former district leader and current underdog candidate against Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez in this year’s Democratic primary, now has some tunes for his campaign.

Global Block Collective, a hip-hop activist organization Mr. Martinez founded, released a video last week starring the candidate and other artists urging the public to “stand up” for a somewhat ambiguous purpose. The video was apparently shot during the May Day protests earlier this month and includes a number of shots of police and protesters, as well as other settings like the subway. Read More

Caller Ad Declares Himself to Be ‘The Super Jewish Candidate’

Nachman Caller, a likely Republican candidate for the new, heavily Orthodox Jewish district, embraced the “Super Jewish District” terminology some have used for the seat in his latest campaign ad, featured in Hamodia yesterday. The Wednesday extended edition of the paper, designed to be read during Shabbos, is the most widely read of the week.

“The Super Jewish Candidate for The Super Jewish District,” the ad declares, with all of its subsequent points in Yiddish. Read More

DCCC Hammers Senate Candidate Bob Turner

GOP Congressman Bob Turner may no longer be seeking reelection, but the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the campaign arm of the House Democrats, is continuing to barrage him with attacks anyway.

“Representative Bob Turner (NY-09) just showed his true priorities once again — voting for the Republican budget that chooses millionaires over Medicare,” a press release yesterday read, while a statement the day before had a spokesman, Jesse Ferguson, declaring, “It’s clear Turner has bowed to the right wing of his party at the expense of the safety and security of New York women.” Read More
