Candidate Issues Apologies for Anti-Gay Mailer

In the final days of his unsuccessful primary campaign, GOP State Senate candidate Juan Reyes sent out campaign literature accusing his rival, Councilman Eric Ulrich, of being hypocritical on the topic of gay marriage. Many Republicans felt that the mailer in question, which criticized Mr. Ulrich hiring gay staff members and eating dinner with a gay colleague crossed the line. Even former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, in whose administration Mr. Reyes once worked, lumbered out to hold a press conference condemning the literature on the Steps of City Hall.

Following his loss in last Thursday’s election, Mr. Reyes apparently regrets sending the mailing. In a third-person statement posted on his campaign website over the weekend, he claimed to have not personally reviewed it and profusely apologized to anyone who might have been offended: Read More

Yvette Clarke Struggles With History on Colbert Report [Video]

Congresswoman Yvette Clarke went on The Colbert Report last night, where she argued some questionable points regarding her borough’s history. Notably, Ms. Clarke contended that the Dutch continued the practice of slavery in Brooklyn in 1898.

Candidate Writes ‘Negrohood’ Instead of ‘Neighborhood’ on a Campaign Mailer; Probably Regrets It

At the end of last week, Sheepshead Bites reported that Ben Akselrod, campaigning for the State Assembly in southeastern Brooklyn, mistakenly sent out campaign literature describing crime going up in the “negrohood.”

“Dear Friend, I am running for Assembly because I believe the number 1 job of that office is to keep the community safe,” Mr. Akselrod wrote. “The current assemblyman has allowed crime to go up over 50% in our negrohood so far this year. I am fighting for video cameras throughout our community to protect our seniors who are the most vulnerable and cut down on anti-semitic attacks in our community. I will also make sure the mayor gives our community more police to patrol our streets.” Read More

Maragos Apologizes for Conservative Confusion

U.S. Senate candidate George Maragos raised some eyebrows the other day when he announced the endorsement of the “Conservative Party USA (NY)” on the same day that he, and other potential candidates, met with the far more influential New York State Conservative Party.

Asked about this last night on Inside City Hall, Mr. Maragos offered a round of apologies for the confusion.

“The Conservative Party USA endorsed me, it’s a small party. I apologize for the confusion that  may have caused, because that’s a different party [from] the New York party headed by Mike Long,” he said. “I called Mike Long personally to apologize in that regard.” Read More
