Poll: Christine Quinn Continues to Lead Democratic Primary

Quinnipiac University Polling Institute is out with another survey of New York City voters today and Council Speaker Christine Quinn, with 35 percent of the vote, still posts a wide margin over her main Democratic rivals in the campaign for City Hall. Public Advocate Bill de Blasio came in second with 11 percent, followed by former Comptroller Bill Thompson at 10 percent and Comptroller John Liu’s 9 percent.

“Council Speaker Christine Quinn still dominates the Democratic field,” Maurice Carroll, the polling firm’s director, said in a statement. “There is almost no gender gap for any candidate. For example, Quinn gets 36 percent of women and 34 percent of men, while Liu gets 10 percent of men and 9 percent of women.” Read More

Poll Finds Congress Less Popular Than Cockroaches and Root Canals

A new poll out from the liberal-leaning firm Public Policy Polling shows just how much dislike Congress. While polls typically simply show lawmakers’ low approval ratings, PPP decided to take a different route and poll approval ratings for Congress compared to other wildly unpopular things. Amazingly, Congress polled even lower than a slew of them including lice, traffic jams, root canals, colonoscopies, cockroaches and the ancient Mongolian warlord Genghis Khan.

“When you’re less popular than cockroaches, Genghis Khan, traffic jams, and yes even Nickelback, well, it might be time to reevaluate,” Tom Jensen, PPP’s director, said in a statement accompanying the poll. Read More

McCaskill Opens Up Big Lead Over Todd Akin In Latest Poll

Note to politicos: Start musing aloud about legitimate rape and watch your poll numbers sink.

That seems to be the case in Missouri, where incumbent Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill has opened up a 10 point lead over her challenger, Congressman Todd Akin in the latest Rasmussen poll. Mr. Akin, of course, burst onto the political scene earlier this week when, during an otherwise routine local TV interview, he stated his objection to abortion even in cases of rape.

“It seems to me, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare,” Mr. Akin said about the chances of getting pregnant due to rape. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something: I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be of the rapist, and not attacking the child.” Read More

Poll Shows ‘Legitimate Rape’ Flap Might Not Have Sunk Todd Akin’s Senate Chances

A new poll might explain why Congressman Todd Akin isn’t heeding the wishes of Republican Party leaders and dropping out of the Missouri Senate race following the firestorm over his comments on “legitimate rape.” According to the latest numbers from Public Policy Polling, Mr. Akin still maintains the same slim one percent lead over his opponent, incumbent Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill,” that he enjoyed prior to the controversy over his suggestion rape doesn’t lead to pregnancy because “the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” Read More

Obama Pollster Says (With Data) Ryan Pick a Dud

The Obama campaign is out this morning with a memo from lead pollster Joel Benenson that finds–unsurprisingly, perhaps, considering the source–that the choice of Paul Ryan as Mitt Romney’s running mate has been a dud.

The memo, titled “The Announcement without a Bounce: Romney’s Choice of Ryan Falls Flat” lays out the data.

Among the salient findings are that typically a veep choice gives a candidate a 4.7 percent bounce, but that according to Gallup, the choice of Mr. Ryan gained Mr. Romney only 1 percentage point. Mr. Benenson, who is based in New York, also said that veep choices count little among how voters actually vote, but that they do say something about a candidate’s decision-making ability.  Read More

Quinn Crushes In Latest Q-Poll

The latest survey from Quinnipiac Polling Institute shows Council Speaker Christine Quinn with a huge lead over her Democratic rivals for mayor.

With the election possibly as soon as ten months away–legislators in Albany have yet to finalize a date–Ms. Quinn garners 29 percent of Democrats. Former comptroller Bill Thompson trails with ten percent of the vote, followed by public advocate Bill de Blasio and Comptroller John Liu, who each have nine percent of the vote.

But there is hope for the also-rans: 34 percent of voters say they are undecided.  Read More

Dem Poll Has Maloney/Hayworth Race Tied

This can be taken with as many grains of salt as one wishes, but a poll released today by Democratic House Majority PAC shows that Democrat Sean Patrick Maloney is within striking distance of upsetting Republican incumbent Nan Hayworth.

The poll gives Ms.  Hayworth a 48-45 edge, and in a release the PAC notes that puts the freshman congresswoman below “the 50 percent threshold for a well-positioned incumbent.”

“Nan Hayworth doesn’t represent the interests of the Hudson Valley,” said Alixandria Lapp, Executive Director of House Majority PAC. “Whether it’s her support for ending Medicare as we know it and allowing insurance companies to charge women more for coverage just because they’re women or the political games she played holding up critical disaster relief funding after Tropical Storm Irene, Hayworth’s extreme agenda is wrong for New York.” Read More

New Poll Shows Cuomo’s Approval Rating Taking a Slight Hit

A new Siena Research Institute poll of voters in New York State shows that, while still high, Governor Andrew Cuomo’s favorability ratings are at their lowest since he took office in 2011. The poll also showed President Barack Obama up 20 points over Mitt Romney in the Empire State, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand way ahead of her three potential opponents, displeasure with Occupy Wall Street and the Tea Party, strong support for raising the minimum wage and high favorability ratings for the Legislature.  Read More

Kelly Mayoral Run Would Be A Loser: Poll

A new poll out today by Quinnipiac Polling Institute throws some cold water on those who want Ray Kelly to run for mayor.

Mr. Kelly, currently the city’s police commissioner, would lose to all three top Democrats, the poll found.

He trails Council Speaker Christine Quinn by 15 points, former City Comptroller Bill Thompson by 12 points, and Public Advocate Bill de Blasio by 12.

Mr. Kelly still has high approval ratings, however, with 66 percent of New Yorker approving of his tenure as the city’s top cop. Read More

Long Says Turner and Maragos Are No-Impact Men

After a Quinnipiac Poll out today showed Manhattan lawyer and conservative activist Wendy Long trailing Queens Congressman Bob Turner in the race for the U.S, Ms. Long released a statement slamming the current holder of the seat, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, and that her better known opponents have failed to have an impact on the race.

“Two things from today’s Quinnipiac poll are abundantly clear; Senator Gillibrand is vulnerable and my two current office holding opponents in the Republican primary have not made much of an impact on the voters of New York State,” Ms Long said in a statement. “Conventional GOP candidates have thrice tried and thrice failed to beat Kirsten Gillibrand. Having never run for office, I am not surprised that New Yorkers are only just getting familiar with me.” Read More
