President Obama Visits Australia - Day 1

In Front of NBA Greats, Obama Teases Todd Akin

President Barack Obama stood on the stage at Alice Tully Hall tonight dressed in a dark black suit with a dark tie and looking very much like a performer—a conductor, perhaps, of a swing band.

The seats in the audience were empty, but onstage with Mr. Obama were about 120 guests seated at a dozen or so round tables, each paying $20,000 for the privilege.

The event was a fundraiser with NBA stars, and when he spoke, Mr. Obama joked that usually at these kinds of events he was the center of attention, but at this one most people there hoped to get an autograph with some of the NBA greats in attendance, including Patrick Ewing, Bill Bradley, Walt Frazier and the host of the evening, Michael Jordan. Martin O’Malley To Fundraise For Gay Marriage With Scott Stringer and Christine Quinn

Strange bedfellows indeed.

Manhattan borough president Scott Stringer and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn–both top contenders in the mayor’s race–will join forces next month for a fundraiser to support same-sex marriage in the state of Maryland.

Also on the marquee that night is Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, who as we have written about, has emerged as a top rival to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the early jockeying for the 2016 presidential race.  And the candidates record on gay marriage is expected to play a major role in that Democratic primary.

Same-sex marriage passed the legislature in Maryland, but  it’s up for a referendum in November, and both sides are marshaling major resources for the fight.  Read More

Tom Allon Reports: $250K Raised So Far

Manhattan Media publisher Tom Allon announced that he has raised a healthy $250,000 in his longshot bid to become the city’s next mayor.

It is also worth noting that although $250,000 is a significant sum, especially for a first time candidate, it is far below what the other mayoral contenders have received, most of whom are close to maxing out (if they have not already done so.)

Mr. Allon said that he $100,000 in the last filing period and added another $150,000 in this one, most of which came in he said in the past month.

Barney Frank To Raise For Chelsea Council Candidate

Corey Johnson, a candidate for the west side city council seat now belonging to the term-limited Christine Quinn, is getting some high-powered help in his bid for office.

Two openly gay members of the House of Representatives–Barney Frank of Massachusetts and Jared Polis of Colorado–are hosting a fundraiser for Mr. Johnson–at a townhouse tonight in the Logan Circle neighborhood of Washington D.C.

Tickets go for $50-$150, but because the soiree is in Washington D.C, it is unlikely that very many of the people there will be city residents, and those any contributions will not be able counted in the city’s generous campaign finance matching program. Read More

At Waldorf Fundraisers for Romney, No Mention of Last Night’s Losses

Mr. Romney suffered a 1-2 punch of losses last night, coming in a close third place in the Alabama and Mississippi primaries. But those defeats were brushed off at a pair of fundraisers for Mr.Romney at the Waldorf-Astoria, according to several sources who attended them.

“The mood was great,” said John Catsimatidis, the supermarket magnate who hosted the afternoon fundraiser.  ”The media doesnt always reflect reality. More delegates were won last night by Romney voters than by any of the rest of them. When the media says its a big win for Santorum, they are not telling the truth. It’s basic math. Do you own homework and add the numbers. The truth is the truth.”  Read More

Catsimatidis and Isaacs Raise For Romney

The chairman of the Manhattan Republican Party and one of Manhattan’s most generous Republican donors are teaming up to raise money for Mitt Romney.

Dan Isaacs, the Manhattan chair, and John Catsimatidis, the supermarket magnate and one-time potential mayoral aspirant sent out an email this afternoon announcing that the get-together with the former Massachusetts governor will be next week at the Waldorf-Astoria, and ticket prices range from $1,000 to $2,500. And the invitation notes that “The Governor will have an opportunity to meet everyone in the room.”

The fundraiser comes as for the first time questions are being raised about Mr. Romney’s ability to raise money. An article in The New York Times today pointed out how most of Mr. Romney’s money is coming from big donors, and that he lags among small dollar contributors that reveal how much grassroots support a campaign really has.

The Romney campaign pushed back today, sending out a release touting the $11.5 million that they have raised in February, and pointing out that 83 percent of all the funds they have raised have been in amounts under $250. The campaign memo, and the invite are both below: Read More

White Shoe Law Firm Named Top Donor To NY Delegation

A report out today from MapLight, a research organization that studies the influence of money on politics, came out with a report today detailing which companies give the most to each state’s congressional delegation.

In New York, that distinction goes to the law firm of Boies, Schiller and Flexner who gave close to $700,000 to current members of the House and Senate from New York.

That firm was founded by David Boies, the super-lawyer who represented Al Gore during the 2000 recount and who has since been one of the lead lawyers attempting to over California’s anti-gay marriage Proposition 8. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a frequent target of the firms’ largesse, was also a partner there earlier in her career. Read More

Top Romney Donor Tries To Wrangle Last Remaining Hold-Outs

Just when Mitt Romney appears to be down on his luck, his finance team comes into save him.

Woody Johnson, the owner of the New York Jets and the one Mr. Romney’s top donors, convened a meeting of a dozen or so top  unaffiliated Republican financiers this afternoon to urge them to get behind the candidate who most Republicans think is their best candidate to take on Barack Obama.

According to a source who was there, the meeting was an effort to “talk about what is going on in terms of the primaries, in terms of the elections, in terms of the positions, in terms of the focus, the message, and how it was presented. The general consensus was that Mitt Romney is the best candidate.” Read More
