Donovan Richards Nabs Working Families Party

The February 19 special election to replace Councilman James Sanders continues to heat up, and one of the candidates, Donovan Richards, scored the influential endorsement of the labor-backed Working Families Party.

“A district that’s still badly damaged by Hurricane Sandy needs a champion for working families like Donovan Richards,” said Bill Lipton, the WFP’s deputy director in a statement, referencing the extensive devastation that occurred along the southeastern Queens coastline. “Donovan has fought gun violence and protected libraries, schools and hospitals from cuts and closure. He’ll be a tremendous addition to the City Council.” Read More

Fidler and Storobin Both Declare Victory With Tight Results

After a long, winding, and brutal road, the race to replace Carl Kruger in the State Senate is finally over.

Just joking.

According to the Daily News‘ Celeste Katz, the Republican candidate, David Storobin, is up 10,756 to 10,636 — a mere 120 votes — over Democratic candidate Lew Fidler.

However, with absentee and provisional ballots still to be counted, the ultimate winner is still very much up in the air. From reports on the ground, including from The Politicker‘s Hunter Walker at Storobin headquarters, both candidates appeared to have declared victory tonight, adding yet another confusing chapter to their sharply competing campaigns. Storobin Campaign Files FCC Complaint Against Davidzon Radio

The campaign of David Storobin, the Republican candidate in the special election to replace Carl Kruger in the State Senate, announced this evening they are pursuing a federal elections complaint against Russian-language media force Gregory Davidzon, a key supporter of Mr. Storobin’s Democratic opponent, Councilman Lew Fidler.

“Storobin’s campaign attempted to purchase $10,000 in radio advertising from Davidzon radio two weeks ago,” their press release read. “After several delay tactics, Mr. Davidzon himself refused to allow the advertising even though he is required to do so under federal law.” Read More

Greenfield Endorses Fidler [Video]

Yesterday evening, Councilman David Greenfield endorsed fellow Councilman Lew Fidler’s state senate campaign, giving Mr. Fidler a bit of momentum as he campaigns for the sizable Orthodox Jewish vote in the district he seeks to represent.

Mr. Greenfield, saying Mr. Fidler is “the best person to fight for the frum community in the New York State Senate,” specifically praised his plan to reduce the financial burden of Jewish educational institutions. Read More

‘This ISN’T A David Weprin Situation’

Councilman Lew Fidler, fresh out of the hospital, is looking to gather public support from community leaders to run in newspaper advertisements next week, and one of the specific pitches to these leaders suggests the remaining sensitivity of gay marriage in the socially conservative circles of southern Brooklyn politics.

Jeff Leb, the Chairman of the Marine Park Jewish Community Council, reached out to potential supporters of Mr. Fidler’s State Senate campaign this morning via email. In addition to extolling Mr. Fidler’s work on behalf of his organization and others, the letter, forwarded to The Politicker, sought to allay potential concerns recipients may have.

“This ISN’T a David Weprin situation where there was an outright vote for Gay Marriage on the floor of the Assembly that offended many Jewish people,” he wrote, referring to Assemblyman Weprin’s failed run for Congress last year. Democratic Assemblyman Dov Hikind and newspapers like Hamodia cited the marriage issue when they heavily criticized Mr. Weprin’s candidacy. Read More
