Independence Party Goes to Bat for Carrión

The Independence Party is fuming that likely candidate Adolfo Carrión was not invited to last night’s Daily News mayoral forum, going so far as to blast out a statement last night tearing into the paper–the clearest indication yet that the ex-Bronx Borough President is likely to receive their coveted (and controversial) endorsement.

“The Daily News … has articulated no clear criteria for inclusion but its decision clearly discriminates against independents, which Mr. Carrión is,” said Cathy Stewart, a spokesperson for the New York City Independence Party. “This exclusion is an affront to democracy and the 1 million New Yorkers who are independent. The Daily News is supposed to cover elections, not pre-determine them.” Read More

Bob Turner: Obama Must Think Israel Is an ‘Inconvenience’

Congressman Bob Turner may be on his way out of Washington, but he is still a sharp critic of President Barack Obama’s foreign policy when it comes to the Middle-East. The latest issue at hand? President Barack Obama reportedly declining to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this month, which Mr. Turner said shows “a true lack of leadership.”

“Less than a year has passed since President Obama made disparaging remarks about ‘having to deal’ with Prime Minister Netanyahu,” Mr. Turner said in a statement earlier today. “His decision to turn down Prime Minister Netanyahu’s meeting request shows just how much of an inconvenience it really is for the President. If the President truly ‘has Israel’s back’ he would make it his first priority to meet with our friends.” Read More

Sandra Fluke Discusses Being Rejected From House Contraception Hearing

Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke talked to The Politicker today about her rejection from yesterday’s House oversight committee hearing on President Barack Obama’s controversial contraception coverage rule. House Democrats wanted Ms. Fluke to be a witness at the hearing, but the committee’s chair, California Congressman Darrell Issa, denied the request and said she was ”not found to be appropriate or qualified.”

“He said that I was not an appropriate witness or a qualified witness. The appropriate witness part just really struck me because I can’t imagine who would be more appropriate to address this policy than the stories of the women I wanted to share,” Ms. Fluke told The Politicker. “They are the women affected by this policy, they are the appropriate witnesses.” Read More
