FCC to Look at Improving Cell Service After Future Disasters

Senator Chuck Schumer is known for pushing populist issues that may have otherwise flown under the radar, and last weekend, he didn’t disappoint. In a letter to the  Federal Communications Commission last weekend, Mr. Schumer called on the agency to develop a nationwide plan to improve cell phone service in the aftermath of natural disasters. Earlier today, Mr. Schumer announced the FCC would at least give the New York area a better look by holding field hearings early next year on the issue.

“Field hearings will increase our understanding of the problems encountered during Superstorm Sandy and harvest the best ideas to ensure that mobile phone service doesn’t fail after future storms,” Mr. Schumer said in a statement. “Mobile communication has become an essential part of our lives, and increasing its reliability must be a top priority. I’d like to thank Chairman Genachowski and the FCC for their good work during the storm, and for beginning to tackle this important issue so quickly after.” Read More

Hakeem Jeffries Robocalls for Walter Mosley

Assemblyman and soon-to-be Congressman Hakeem Jeffries endorsed in a number of candidates the primaries happening on Thursday, including pols supported by the county organization, like Senator Martin Dilan and those opposed to it, such as District Leader Lincoln Restler. However, if there’s any race Mr. Jeffries really cares about, it’s surely the one to replace him in the State Assembly, where Mr. Jeffries will get a raw test if the political organization that propelled him to a congressional primary win earlier this year can be sustained and work for others. Murphy Campaign’s Robocall Hypes Grimm Controversies

Democrat Mark Murphy is not interested in letting Congressman Michael Grimm’s controversies go away anytime soon. After holding a press conference earlier this week highlighting the immigration-related arrest of Ofer Biton, who reportedly helped Mr. Grimm raise hundreds of thousands of dollars, Mr. Murphy’s campaign is now robocalling homes in his district with exactly the same message.

“I am calling with an important message for Staten Island and Brooklyn voters about Congressman Michael Grimm’s latest scandals and bad decisions,” the robocall’s female voice narrates. “Last Friday Congressman Grimm’s biggest fund-raiser, Ofer Biton, was arrested by the FBI. This is just the latest close aide to Grimm to be caught in serious legal troubles.” Read More

Ed Koch Robocalls for Lew Fidler

Former Mayor Ed Koch waded into the special election to replace Carl Kruger in the State Senate this week by recording a robocall on Democratic Councilman Lew Fidler’s behalf, and sources both in the district and outside of it told The Politicker they have already begun receiving them.

This isn’t the first time voters in this district have received robocalls from Mr. Koch about a special election; the former mayor recorded  robocalls for GOP Congressional candidate Bob Turner in the same corner of southeastern Brooklyn, including one bashing the Democratic candidate, David Weprin.

Needless to say, Mr. Koch is back on the Democratic team in this time. Here’s the script: Read More
