Vito Lopez Rejects ‘Salacious and Sensational Claims’ Against Him

Assemblyman Vito Lopez is not happy with today’s state ethics commission’s report detailing the sexual harassment allegations that former staff members have lodged against him. Accordingly, Mr. Lopez blasted both the report’s process and its findings in a lengthy, 3-page statement released this afternoon.

“Salacious and sensational claims in the JCOPE report are fallacious,” Mr. Lopez said, referring to the Joint Commission on Public Ethics and writing in third-person perspective. “These claims, including that he made sexual references to a 14 year old intern and ‘opined that statutory rape laws should not exist’, are simply not true.” Read More

James Sanders Clarifies ‘Snitching’ Stance Regarding Corruption

Several days ago, State Senator James Sanders reacted to the news that his predecessor wore a wire in an attempt to reduce her corruption sentence, by criticizing her for “snitching.” Well, the New York Post didn’t take kindly to that, and this morning, the publication editorialized harshly against Mr. Sanders, claiming he “seems to be endorsing the crime-abetting law of street thugs.”

Mr. Sanders released a follow-up statement this afternoon taking exception to the Post‘s characterization. “Snitching,” Mr. Sanders wrote, was only in the context of entrapment, which he insisted the editorial missed. Read More

Shootings In Cambridge, Watertown Draw Massive Police Response

Governor Cuomo Says Boston Bombing Part of ‘New Normal’

Mayor Michael Bloomberg may have canceled his morning radio appearance today in response to the ongoing manhunt for a suspect involved in Monday’s deadly bombing attack on the Boston Marathon, but another top New York official, Governor Andrew Cuomo, scheduled his own radio interview on The Capitol Pressroom soon after. Mr. Cuomo directly addressed the high-profile situation in the Bay State by employing a phrase he previously used to describe climate change in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy: “the new normal.”

“It’s a terrible situation in Boston. And, unfortunately, … one gets the sense that this is more reflective of the ‘new normal,’ if you will,” he explained. “So much of society is changing so rapidly. We talk about a ‘new normal’ when it comes t0 climate change and adjusting to a change in the weather patterns. ‘New normal’ when it comes to public security in a post-9/11 world. Where these random acts of violence, which at one time were implausible, now seem all-too-frequent.” Read More

Bill de Blasio Says Christine Quinn’s Campaign Launch Was ‘More of the Same’

As Council Speaker Christine Quinn officially kicked off her bid to be the first female Mayor of New York City today, one of her chief rivals in the Democratic primary, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, had his own launch event for “Women for de Blasio.” Not shying away from boisterous rhetoric, Mr. de Blasio labeled the event “an extraordinary moment for our campaign” and said it was part of a process that would ultimately change New York City’s future.

“I want to thank everyone for being here. I got to tell you, this is how the world turns. This is how things change,” he told the crowd of supporters gathered at the Synagogue for the Arts in Lower Manhattan. “People who have decided what they believe in, who have decided they can make a difference. That applying that … energy in an infectious manner starts to change a society before their very eyes. If we had a dozen such people, we’d be beginning to change this city, but there are hundreds of such people in this room. I’ve always adored the quote from Margaret Mead, ‘Never doubt that a small group of [thoughtful,] committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.’” Read More

Bill Thompson Likes Bloomberg’s Styrofoam Ban, But Not His ‘Disturbing’ Defense of NYCHA

While all-but-officially announced mayoral candidate John Liu aggressively slammed Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s State of the City speech as revisionist history, one of Mr. Liu’s likely rivals in the mayor’s race, Bill Thompson, took a more moderate approach. Mr. Thompson released a statement earlier this afternoon that praised parts of the speech while critiquing others.

“I commend the mayor’s willingness to put forth specific ideas for our city’s future, including his Styrofoam initiative, and urge fellow leaders to engage in a vigorous and respectful debate on this important matter,” Mr. Thomspon began. Read More
