Squadron Aims To Out ALEC In Albany

New York Republicans are gathering  for their convention in Tampa, but Brooklyn State Sen. Daniel Squadron has a message for them when they return: Disclose your ties to ALEC!

“ALEC spends thousands of corporate dollars a year to advocate for and against legislation,” said Mr. Squadron. “Legislators who are part of ALEC can call it what they want. But undisclosed lobbying by any other name still stinks. That’s why I’m urging my colleagues in New York and around the country to take the pledge to disclose if ALEC helps shape their bills.”

ALEC, short for American Legislative Exchange Council, has become a recent target of much criticism of Democrats. The Center for Media and Democracy, in a recent expose, revealed that the group is a “front group” in which “corporations hand state legislators the changes to the law they desire that directly benefit their bottom line.” Read More

Stringer Joins NY Delegation Calling For Olympic Moment of Silence In Honor of Munich

Scott Stringer joined members of the New York Congressional delegation today in launching a petition which calls on the London Olympics to  hold a moment of silence in honor of the Israeli athletes slain during the Munich games in 1972.

Forty years ago terrorists shocked the world by murdering eleven Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics. The International Olympics Committee (IOC) has a moral responsibility to keep remembrance alive as we approach this tragic anniversary, but has refused to take action. Read More

Michael Grimm May Lose Independence Party Line [Update X2]

Last night, candidates for federal office submitted their petitions to be on the primary and general election ballots. Rival campaigns, through proxies, now have the chance to object to their signatures and see if enough can be ruled invalid to disqualify them from the party line.

This is exactly what has already happened with GOP Congressman Michael Grimm’s bid to be nominated by the Independence Party, which he declared was a “game changer” when he initially announced their backing. However, the campaign of his Democratic opponent, Mark Murphy, is questioning whether he turned in enough valid signatures to bring that endorsement into effect. Read More
