Crowley Rebukes House Dems On NYPD Surveillance Vote

Yesterday, most of New York’s delegation in the House of Representatives backed a measure that would have rebuked the New York Police Department for their Muslim surveillance program by blocking federal spending on police programs that violate the Constitution.

The measure brought howls of protest from conservatives and from Long Island Rep. Peter King, and it ultimately went down to defeat.

This morning, Liz Crowley, a City Councilwoman from Queens who is running for the Congressional seat formerly held by Gary Ackerman sent out a statement saying that she opposed her would-be Democratic colleagues’ efforts.

“Withholding federal funding from our police department because our cops have done their jobs is wrong,” Ms. Crowley said. “The NYPD has acted lawfully to protect New Yorkers from very real terrorist threats. Voting for this measure frustrates the NYPD’s efforts to keep us safe.  We need to work on expanding funding for the NYPD in a dangerous world, not cutting it off.” Read More

With Eye On General, Lancman Blasts Halloran Over Living Wage Vote–UPDATE x2

Criticizing fellow Democrats in a Democratic primary can be problematic. Criticizing Republicans in a Democratic primary can be cathartic.

Thus, over the transom this morning came a statement from Rory Lancman, a Queens Assemblyman locked in a tight Democratic primary in NY-6 blasting the GOP candidate in the race, Dan Halloran, for voting against a living wage bill yesterday in the City Council.

“Mr. Halloran’s ‘no’ vote on the living wage bill in the City Council was a slap in the face to working New Yorkers desperately struggling to get by in this economy,” Mr. Lancman said. “Apparently, the right to earn ten dollars an hour is an unfair demand for working people in our city to make of companies receiving over $1 million in government subsidies.” Read More

Painters Union Endorses Crowley

The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades District Council 9 announced today that they were backing Elizabeth Crowley in the heated primary to replace Gary Ackerman in a Congressional race in Queens.

“Elizabeth Crowley understands the needs of our membership. Only 12 years ago, she was working on job sites throughout the City. She understands that construction sites need to be safe and that an honest day of work deserves an honest day of pay,” said said union head Joseph Ramaglia. “As a Council Member, she has worked tirelessly to create jobs and advocate for workers. That is the type of person we need to send to Washington.”

DC 9 represents more than 11,000 painters, decorators, glaziers, and paint makers in the city. Ms. Crowley must count on the support of the building trades if she is to counter the support that the Queens County Democratic Party has provided to Grace Meng and the Working Families Party has given Rory Lancman, her two biggest rivals for the race.  Read More

Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley is set to receive the endorsement of the Uniformed Firefighters Association in her bid for an open Congressional seat in Queens.

Lancman Grabs RWDSU

Assemblyman Rory Lancman grabbed the first major union endorsement in the race to replace Gary Ackerman in Congress, scoring the backing of the increasingly vocal Retail Wholesale and Department Store Union.

“Rory Lancman has been one of the most aggressive and effective advocates for working people in New York,” said Stuart Appelbaum, President of RWDSU. “Our endorsement of his candidacy sends a clear message: Rory is the candidate of working people in this Congressional race.”

The RWDSU boasts of a 40,000 strong membership, but its real strength has been in its increasing advocacy of social justice matters over the last couple of years, most recently in its concerted push for a living wage bill in New York City. Read More
