Dan Halloran Announcing Congressional Run Monday

Queens Republican Councilman Dan Halloran will announce on Monday that he is running for Congress for the seat currently held by retiring Rep. Gary Ackerman.

Mr. Halloran is so far the only announced Republican interested in the seat. Three Democrats are vying for it so far, including Assemblyman Rory Lancman, Assemblywoman Grace Meng and City Councilwoman Liz Crowley.

It is a race that is, at the very least, bound to be entertaining–the Queens County Democratic Party has backed Ms. Meng, even though Ms. Crowley is first cousins with the leader of the party, Congressman Joe Crowley. And Mr. Lancman has had his eye on Congress for nearly a year, first preparing to run against Congressman Bob Turner, until he was redistricted out, then against Mr. Ackerman, until he retired. Liz Crowley Hires Campaign Manager

Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley, who’s running for a new open Congressional District in Queens, has hired State Senator Toby Stavisky’s Chief of Staff Avi Fink to manage her campaign.

Interestingly, Ms. Stavisky is close to the Queens Democratic Party and was one of the party leaders who successfully nominated Assemblywoman Grace Meng for the establishment’s formal endorsement in the race, even though Ms. Crowley is the cousin of the Democratic establishment’s leader Congressman Joe Crowley.

The news, first reported by the Daily News‘ Alison Gendar, was subsequently confirmed in an email Mr. Fink circulated to his contacts. Read More

Dan Halloran Considering Congressional Campaign

Republican Queens Councilman Dan Halloran is considering throwing his hat into the race for the newly-created District 6 House of Representatives seat. Sources told The Politicker Mr. Halloran was making the rounds looking for volunteers at David Storobin’s election night party on Tuesday and Steven Stites, the Councilman’s spokesman confirmed he’s mulling a Congressional campaign.

“He’s giving the run consideration. There’s a lot of folks in the local Republican party and the community that want him to run and that think he would be a very great fit for the district,” Mr. Stites said. Read More

Analysis of NY-6 Reveals Path to Victory for Lancman, Crowley

Yesterday we wrote about how City Councilwoman Liz Crowley’s entrance into the Congressional race to replace Gary Ackerman seemed, on its face, a little absurd.

Ms. Crowley’s cousin is Congressman Joe Crowley, the head of the Queens County Democratic Party, who threw their support behind Assemblywoman Grace Meng. And Ms. Meng would be New York City’s first Asian-American member of Congress, representing a district that has a slight plurality of Asian residents.

But a Democratic source emailed us today to suggest that Ms. Crowley or the third person in the race, Assemblyman Rory Lancman, may have a better chance that it first appears. Read More
