Meng Raises off Halloran’s ‘Racism’; Halloran Attacks on NYPD Funding

The race for New York’s 6th Congressional District heated up a bit today, with both sides launching broadsides against one another.

To start, Assemblywoman Grace Meng, the Democratic candidate in the race, sent a fundraising email to her supporters entitled, “No Room for Racism.” At issue was a Times of Israel profile of her Republican opponent, Councilman Dan Halloran, where he was quoted saying some provocative things about her nationality. Halloran Addresses Jimmy Meng Allegations [Video]

After former Assemblyman Jimmy Meng, the father of current Assemblywoman — and congressional candidate — Grace Meng, was arrested last week for allegedly soliciting an $80,000 bribe to fix a court case, Ms. Meng’s Republican opponent, Councilman Dan Halloran, very directly declined to comment for the time being. But Mr. Halloran still has thoughts on the issue, as evidenced by his endorsement speech for a Republican Council candidate the day after Mr. Meng was indicted.

“Because he’s a Republican, the type of scrutiny that he’s going to get is unreal,” Mr. Halloran said of the media’s future treatment of Andy Sullivan, a candidate against incumbent Brooklyn Councilman Vinnie Gentile in 2013. “In my race, my opponent had her father arrested and indicted in federal court yesterday for scamming $80,000 out of a Chinese businessman, on tape, by FBI. And he bundled one quarter of her money for her race, but they don’t even mention her! Don’t even mention her!” Read More

Dan Halloran Vows to Repeal ‘Obamacare’ [Video]

Councilman Dan Halloran, the Republican councilman who will face off against Democratic Assemblyman Grace Meng in November to represent Queens’ 6th District in the House released a new campaign video on YouTube this morning blasting President Barack Obama’s healthcare reform law.

“When ObamaCare was passed in 2009, we were lied to. This new tax is the biggest in our country’s history, and it doesn’t take on the real problems of the health care industry,” Mr. Halloran says in the clip. Read More

In Final Hours, Elizabeth Crowley Is Feeling Good

Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley’s congressional campaign was initially viewed as something of a third wheel in what was expected to be a marquee battle solely between Assembly Members Grace Meng and Rory Lancman. In front of a polling station in Forest Hills, however, Ms. Crowley said those expectations were flawed from the very start.

“I think those people were outsiders,” she said. “They were like politicos that didn’t know the realities of the district. I’m popular in my district and my district has a large portion of the overall congressional district. I represent more than my opponents do.” Read More

Crowley Nabs A Newspaper Endorsement

There’s a growing sense among some politicos that Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley’s congressional campaign is a more real force than it seemed at the start (i.e. when she was battling charges that her candidacy was designed to split the white vote to favor the county pick, Assemblywoman Grace Meng), and nudging her further along that path today is an endorsement from the Queens Ledger.

“She has more intellect than most people give her credit for,” the editorial says in what could be a case of Damning With Faint Praise. “[A]nd she is truly as comfortable walking with the working class than any of her opponents in this primary.” Read More

South Asian Group Looks to Make Its Mark in Queens Congressional Race

“It’s not a secret that, in this county, South Asians don’t really vote. That’s not a secret. Most people know that,” Ali Najmi, the director of political action at the Alliance of South Asian-American Labor, said at the organization’s endorsement event for Assemblywoman Grace Meng, a candidate for congress, last Sunday.

“But in this election, we’re going to change that narrative,” he continued, arguing the June 26th election poses a unique opportunity for South Asians to establish itself politically with a sophisticated get-out-the-vote operation. “This goal is bigger than Grace Meng.” Read More

Lancman Blasts ‘Sham Candidacy Of Long-Time Party Hack’

Assemblyman Rory Lancman’s campaign issued a lengthy statement this morning criticizing Jeffrey Gottlieb’s late entry in the crowded race for the sixth district as the “sham candidacy by a long-time party hack” designed by the Queens Democratic Party to disrupt Mr. Lancman’s campaign. City & State reported Mr. Gottlieb, who has a patronage position with the local Board of Elections and has been “heavily involved in Jewish causes in Queens” for decades, began circling last minute petitions to enter the District 6 race last week. Grace Meng has the backing of the county party in that race, but Mr. Lancman is hoping the district’s large Jewish population can propel him to a win and believes Mr .Gottlieb’s bid is aimed at undercutting his support in that community.

“The County organization is panicked by the strength of my candidacy,” Mr. Lancman said in his statemebt about Mr. Gottlieb. “Cynically fleecing Jewish voters with a sham candidacy by a longtime party hack is particularly appalling. Voters will rightfully see through this charade, and the party insiders responsible for this hatchet job should be ashamed of their attempt to deny the Jewish community a fair and legitimate election.” Read More
