Rangel Raises for Reelection

Congressman Charlie Rangel, an octogenerian who is subject to widespread speculation of retirement rumors both before and after his successful reelection bid earlier this year, isn’t ready to start waving the white flag for his 2014 reelection campaign just yet.

“But, as you know, the fight isn’t over,” he wrote in a fundraising email to supporters earlier this afternoon. “And if I’m going to keep it up, I’ll need your continued support. Can you pitch in $5, $10, $25 or more today? Even as little as $3 can make a big difference!” Read More

Don Imus with Charlie Rangel today.

Don Imus Supports Mitt Romney, Charlie Rangel

Don Imus might not agree with veteran Congressman Charlie Rangel on a whole lot of issues, but he does fully support his reelection bid. While the cowboy-hat-wearing radio host has an apartment in Manhattan, he lives outside of the district, so Mr. Rangel can’t count on his vote. Nevertheless, the transcript of their discussion, which you can view below, details a rather interesting interaction between the two.

“I don’t know why I support you, I don’t agree with you about anything, but I want you to be — if I lived in your district I’d vote for you and I want you to be– I want you to be reelected,” Mr. Imus told Mr. Rangel on Fox Business News this morning. “Why do you suppose that is?” Read More

Charlie Rangel Says ‘Right-Wing Tea Partiers From Texas’ Are Trying To Take Him Out

Congressman Charlie Rangel is trying to use a Super PAC that’s backing his opponent State Senator Adriano Espaillat to his own advantage. The Politicker received a mailer from Mr. Rangel at our Washington Heights bureau in which the congressman encourages people to give him their votes because of the Super PAC’s support for his rival.

“Pinned down on the battlefield in Korea, Charlie Rangel decided to devote himself to public service if God let him survive. And he’s never stopped fighting for us,” the mailer says. “But now right-wing Tea Partiers from Texas are trying to stop him by telling us how to vote–and its time to fight back.” Read More

Espaillat Endorsed by Peralta

Add another Latino voice in the State Legislature to the list of endorsements for State Senator Adriano Espaillat’s congressional campaign. Queens State Senator José Peralta announced he was hopping on board this morning, joining Bronx Senator Gustavo Rivera in supporting their colleague’s campaign against longtime Rep. Charlie Rangel. For his part, Mr. Rangel is expected to get his own prominent backer later today with the endorsement of Bronx Borough Rubén Díaz Jr.

“As a fellow legislator, I have watched Adriano fight for New Yorkers with great passion and energy,” Mr. Peralta said in a statement released by Mr. Espaillat’s campaign. “He has taken on Republican attempts to cut Medicaid, fought for affordable housing by extending and strengthening rent regulations which kept millions of tenants in their homes, and expanded opportunities for immigrants.” Read More

Vince Morgan to End Congressional Bid and Endorse Espaillat

Vince Morgan, a former staffer for Congressman Charlie Rangel, will officially announce his decision to depart the race against his former boss today. Mr. Morgan is giving his endorsement to another one of Mr. Rangel’s challengers, Adriano Espaillat.

“We’re thrilled to have Vince Morgan’s endorsement. It’s yet another sign that Adriano’s message of bringing bold, new ideas to Congress is resonating in all corners of the district,” a spokesman for Mr. Espaillat, Ibrahim Khan, told The Politicker. Read More

Barack Obama Democratic Club Backs Espaillat

The Barack Obama Democratic Club endorsed Adriano Espaillat in his bid for the Congressional seat currently occupied by Charlie Rangel at a candidates forum at the Church of the Intercession on W. 155th Street that featured (almost) all five people running in the race. Mr. Rangel, who has been in and out of the hospital after suffering a back injury last month, was represented by Councilwoman Inez Dickens. The club also endorsed its founder, Mark Levine, for the State Senate seat being vacated by Mr. Espaillat and longtime Assemblyman Herman “Denny” Farrell in his re-election bid. Read More

Add Joyce Johnson Into The Mix For Rangel Seat

Joyce Johnson, a former business executive and Democratic district leader, officially added her name to the mix of contenders hoping to dethrone Charlie Rangel in blog posted on the Huffington Post today.

Ms. Johnson is making her second attempt at the seat Mr. Rangel has held since 1970. In 2010 she garnered the endorsement of The New York Times  and finished in a respectable third place with 12 percent of the vote, behind Mr. Rangel’s 51 percent and 24 percent for Adam Clayton Powell IV.

“I’m running for Congress again in 2012 because I continue to believe what I did then: that a brighter future is possible for all of us when we work together and have strong, efficient leaders in place to support us,” Ms. Johnson writes. Read More

Source: DCCC Meets with a Likely Grimm Challenger, Mark Murphy

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee quietly met in New York City last weekend with Mark Murphy, a Democrat likely to challenge New York City’s only Republican congressman in next year’s elections, according to a source.

Murphy is an aide to Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, and is looking to run against freshman Rep. Michael Grimm. So far, Grimm has more than $400,000 on hand in his campaign account, making him a formidable target to unseat.

Grimm is a former FBI agent and military veteran who ran an insurgent campaign, relying on a mix of support from Tea Party activists and high-profile endorsements from Rudy Giuliani and Sarah Palin. After a contentious primary, Grimm went on to knock off freshman Rep. Mike McMahon in 2010. Read More
