Christine Quinn Won’t Be Sitting at Chris Hayes’ Mayoral Roundtable

On Sunday, MSNBC host Chris Hayes is hosting a roundtable featuring many of the main Democratic mayoral candidates on his eponymous show, Up With Chris Hayes. However, the panel won’t feature the woman who’s currently enjoying a large lead in the polls–Council Speaker Chris Quinn. Though Mr. Hayes has been highly critical of Ms. Quinn of late, both her aides and MSNBC spokespeople attributed her absence from his roundtable to scheduling.

“Speaker Quinn has been able to make 14 candidate forums thus far–two yesterday alone– and she has another 12 committed over the next six weeks. Unfortunately, we just couldn’t make this one work,” Mike Morey, a spokesman for the Quinn campaign, told Politicker. Read More

Gothamist Versus the Council General Counsel

A Freedom of Information Law investigation into the finances of City Council members conducted by the local news blog Gothamist led, Phil Monaco, a staff attorney in the Council general counsel’s office to send around an email warning members about an email from a staffer “who works for the Gothamist.”

“This email appears to contain follow up questions regarding a prior FOIL request from this individual,” Mr. Monaco wrote. “These emails are NOT legitimate FOIL requests. And they do not require a response, as they are not proper requests under the law. There is nothing your offices need to do at this time.”

The issue apparently stemmed from a miscommunication between the media outlet and the Council members it was investigating. Read More

Eliot Spitzer Says Comptroller Speculation ‘Made up out of Nowhere’

A couple days ago, the New York Daily News reported former Governor Eliot Spitzer “is being talked about” as a potential primary candidate against incumbent Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, a move he had reportedly seriously considered in 2010. On NY1′s Inside City Hall last night, however, Mr. Spitzer dismissed the speculation and labeled Mr. DiNapoli “a buddy.”

“It was a tabloid and you know I’ve always said … to you, ‘I never trust what’s in the tabloids!’” Mr. Spitzer declared over the protestations of host the show’s host, Errol Louis, a former Daily News columnist. Read More

Reporters Using ‘Fake Names’ to Buy Obama Campaign Merchandise at the DNC

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Members of the media have apparently been using “fake” names to buy official Obama gear and contribute to the Obama campaign inside the Time Warner Cable Arena where the president is due to speak in a few minutes. During our travels around the arena, Politicker spotted a souvenir stand in one of the press stands selling T-shirts and buttons supporting President Barack Obama, “Democrats Are Hot” bumper stickers and other official Obama merchandise.

The souvenir stand was in a secure area only accessible to those with a media credential and buying campaign gear means contributing to the campaign, so we asked the woman working the cash register whether anyone at the press stand had been making purchases. Her answers were quite surprising.  Read More

New York Post Editorial Board: ‘Extreme? Ultra-conservative? Us?

The New York Post‘s editorial board is apparently undergoing some ideological reflection after Governor Andrew Cuomo opined on the matter yesterday morning, suggesting the paper has a “extreme conservative philosophy,” especially in regards to Mr. Cuomo’s teacher evaluations proposal that the publication feels caters to the teacher’s union rather than the students.

Well, the Post fired back with some Barry Goldwater rhetoric today, penning an editorial entitled “When extremism’s no vice.”

“Extreme? Ultra-conservative? Us?” they rhetorically asked. “Yes, we believe there should be accountability and transparency in public schools. If that makes us ‘extremists,’ so be it.” Read More

Rush Limbaugh Weighs In On Brooklyn’s Bieber-gate, Has High Praise For Bob Turner

Yesterday, you may recall, Bob Turner attempted to host a photo op with students at the Brooklyn school that had banned the singing of Lee Greenwood’s “Proud To Be An American” in favor of Justin Bieber’s “Baby.”

We say “attempted,” because the attempt was drowned out by a number of hecklers.

Well, that attempt has received high praise from the high priest of conservative politics, Rush Limbaugh, who on his radio show said today:

Bob’s going for all the marbles. He’s running for the Senate. And there’s a Republican primary in New York on June 26th, and he’s got a good chance of winning this thing, and we want him to win this seat. He’d be great in the Senate. If he wins the primary, he’d be up against Kirsten Gillibrand for all the marbles Read More

President Obama

Daily Caller ‘Proud’ Of Reporter Who Heckled Obama

President Barack Obama was interrupted during his big immigration reform announcement by a Neil Munro, a reporter with the conservative outlet The Daily Caller   who shouted at the president “Why do you favor foreigners over American workers?”

Mr. Obama quickly grew annoyed by the exchange

“Excuse me, sir,” he said when the reporter first spoke up, raising a finger to quiet the reporter down.

When he didn’t, Mr. Obama responded “It’s not time for questions, sir. Not while I’m speaking.” Read More

Newsweek's cover calling President Obama "the first gay president."

White House Dodges Question on Obama’s Controversial Newsweek Cover

In a gaggle with reporters aboard Air Force One this morning, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney was asked about the controversial Newsweek cover depicting President Barack Obama with a rainbow halo and identifying him as the “First Gay President.” Mr. Carney said he wasn’t sure whether the president was aware of the cover.

“I don’t know if he’s seen it and I haven’t spoken to him about it,” he said. Read More
