Defiant John Liu Vows to Win in Spite of ‘Witch Hunt’ Against Him

Comptroller John Liu officially kicked off his campaign for mayor at a raucous rally on the steps of City Hall attended by several hundred people where he vowed to “be a mayor not of the one percent, but of the 100 percent.” Along with promising to enact populist reforms on housing, education, law enforcement and the business community, Mr. Liu dismissed the ongoing corruption case against two of his associates as a politically motivated “witch hunt” that would not stop him from winning the election.

“When you go after powerful people and rich corporations, they’re going to come after you,” Mr. Liu declared in a fiery speech. “They certainly have made my life challenging, but let me be clear, we are not backing down!” Read More

John Liu Begins His Mayoral Marathon

Comptroller John Liu  will officially announce his campaign for mayor on the steps of City Hall this afternoon as part of a more than 14 hour tour across all five boroughs. His first stop was the Bedford Central Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn, where he reflected on his tenure in the comptroller’s office.

“It’s been a little more than three years now that I’ve had the privilege of serving as city comptroller. Not an easy period of time to be the chief financial officer of anything, let alone our great city of New York,” Mr. Liu said when he took the podium during the church’s 8 a.m. service. “It has been my prime priority to reduce wasteful spending at city agencies. To make sure that they’re not wasting too much money on these pet projects, particularly those that involve those outside consultants and keep the money where it really belongs: services for the people of New York City.” Read More

John Liu’s Supporters Wish Him ‘Happy Birthday, Mr. Mayor’

Earlier tonight, Comptroller John Liu held a birthday party extravaganza at the renowned Jing Fong dim sum restaurant in Manhattan’s Chinatown. It was quite the affair, featuring a number of speakers, a packed crowd, a massive display of balloons, a gigantic American flag-themed birthday cake and even a celebrity impersonator. The event, which doubled as a fundraiser for his expected mayoral campaign, also served as a teaser for the expected electoral effort.

“2013 is going to be a year of change, a year of change in the City of New York, the greatest city in the world!” Mr. Liu declared in a policy-laden speech outlining his plans to achieve greater economic equality in the five boroughs while deftly avoiding directly announcing his intention to run for mayor. “We’ve got a lot of ideas. We’ve got the will to start this campaign and to win this campaign. And 2013 will be a year of change and with all of your support, I know we’re going to get there.”

Then came the “big” announcement. Read More

John Liu Holds Giant Non-Campaign Rally for His 2013 Campaign [Video]

Comptroller John Liu, currently fending off allegations against his campaign fundraising, held a big rally in the A.M.E. Zion Church in Harlem last night where supporters from the sizable crowd constantly chanted, “Keep going John!”

And even though the invitation for the event explicitly stated, “This rally is not related to the Liu’s campaign,” the event was unmistakably a campaign rally as clergyman after clergyman passionately spoke on Mr. Liu’s behalf and urged him to run for mayor in 2013. Read More
