Meng Touts Support From Latino Pols

Assemblywoman Grace Meng’s congressional campaign has been endorsed by almost every elected official in Queens outside of the State Assembly, and today, her campaign announced a couple more endorsements and re-announced others to demonstrate her backing in the Latino community.

The focus on the Latino voters is interesting, as much of the discussion of the demographics of the congressional race thus far has been on the district’s substantial Asian-American and Jewish communities. However, there is still a notable Latino presence of about 18% of the district’s population (the percentage among likely voters is sure to be less). Read More

The New York State Independence Party broke off its recent string of endorsing Republican congressional challengers to endorse Democratic Assemblywoman Grace Meng this afternoon.

The news, first reported by City & State, was confirmed in a subsequent statement sent out from her campaign. Although City & State suggested it might be Congressman Joe Crowley’s relationship with the Independence Party that triggered the endorsement, the organization itself cited Ms. Meng’s passion and and political positions. Dutchess Dems Gets Behind Alexander in Hayworth Race

Successive press releases late last night announced the Dutchess County Democratic Party’s endorsement of Julian Schreibman as their candidate against Congressman Chris Gibson, Justin Wagner against State Senator Greg Ball, and Matt Alexander against Congresswoman Nan Hayworth. However, it is Mr. Alexander who is facing the most competitive race of the three and whose endorsement stands out.

Jeffries Continues to Unite Reform Clubs and Establishment

Over the last twenty-four hours, Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries picked up two more reform clubs in his bid to knock off Congressman Ed Towns in the June 26th Democratic primary, grabbing Prospect Heights Democrats for Reform and the Independent Neighborhood Democrats.

And, although politics in Brooklyn is often defined by support of, or opposition to, the head of the county organization Assemblyman Vito Lopez, both Mr. Lopez and groups that staunchly oppose him, like the Independent Neighborhood Democrats and the New Kings Democrats, are firmly jumping behind Mr. Jeffries’ candidacy. Hakeem Jeffries Scores CWA [Video]

This afternoon, Brooklyn Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries announced the endorsement of the fairly influential Communication Workers of America District 1, which represents over 175,000 building workers throughout the region.

This move is the latest in a small string of labor endorsements in Mr. Jeffries’ campaign to unseat veteran Congressman Ed Towns. He’s already been endorsed by United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1500 and the New York State Council of Machinists, a remarkable early development for a challenger to a Democratic incumbent. Sephardic Magazine Goes All Out for Storobin

COMMUNITY Magazine, a monthly publication that claims a solid circulation in Brooklyn’s Sephardic Jewish community, not only endorsed the Republican candidate in the race to replace corrupt former State Senator Carl Kruger, but they went nuclear in working to persuade their readers follow suit.

Their message starts on the cover, which contains a giant picture of Mr. Storobin with the influential Rabbi Chaim Yisroel Belsky, declaring it a mitzvah (commandment) to vote for the candidate on March 20th.

Further into the magazine is another copy of the National Organization for Marriage’s advertisement blasting Mr. Storobin’s Democratic opponent, Councilman Lew Fidler. Digging even deeper is “A Message for the Community,” a two page document organized by the group Jews for Morality where 49 Rabbis declare it religiously forbidden to support Mr. Fidler on account of his support for gay marriage.
