Liberal Party Endorses Catsimatidis

The Liberal Party endorsed Republican John Catsimatidis as its mayoral candidate, party heads announced at a press conference Tuesday.

“John Catsimatidis understands history and respects the power of a successful Republican-Liberal Party fusion in New York City electoral politic,” party chair  Jack Olchin said in a statement. “In addition, John also understands the concerns and aspirations of all New Yorkers and we feel he will be a people’s Mayor just like the first Republican-Liberal Party fusion Mayor, Fiorello LaGuardia in the 1940′s.” Read More

Rival Roasts Joe Hynes for ‘Apalling’ Conservative Party Endorsement

Last night, the Kings County Conservative Party backed their borough’s district attorney, Joe Hynes, for re-election and, citing his safety record, they formally offered him their ballot line come November. Although Mr. Hynes has been endorsed by the Conservatives for years, at least one of his Democratic primary rivals, Ken Thompson, was outraged by the bipartisan embrace and released a statement detailing his disgust.

“It is appalling that DA Hynes would accept the endorsement of a fringe right-wing group which opposes a woman’s right to choose, gun control and a minimum wage increase, supports the racial profiling of suspects, and sought to remove President Obama from office,” Mr. Thompson said this morning. Curtis Sliwa Says Supporting John Catsimatidis May Leave Him Living on ‘A Park Bench’

Red beret-wearing radio host and local television personality Curtis Sliwa stood behind billionaire John Catsimatidis as he announced his mayoral campaign yesterday. He confirmed to Politicker that Mr. Catsimatidis has his endorsement. Mr. Sliwa is the live-in boyfriend of Democratic Councilwoman Melinda Katz, so we wondered whether his backing of the Republican Mr. Castimatidis led to any debates at home.

“Oh yeah,” Mr. Sliwa said. “There’s a disagreement at home about everything. I have to be careful or I’ll be taking a timeshare on a park bench in Cunningham Park in Queens.” Read More

HTC Going With Golden

The powerful Hotel Trades Council union is set to endorse Marty Golden this afternoon, The Politicker  has learned.

The union typically goes with Democrats–although they did back Mayor Mike Bloomberg in 2009–and represents a significant boost for Mr. Golden, a Republican who will face Andrew Gounardes, in November.

“The Hotel Trades Council is proud to endorse Senator Marty Golden for re-election.   Senator Golden consistently stands with hotel workers throughout New York in our struggle for good wages and fair benefits,” said Josh Gold the union’s political director, in a statement. “This past year, Senator Golden was instrumental in passing new legislation that protects workers’  rights to join a union at public hotel projects throughout New York. We know we can count on his continued leadership & support.” Read More

Writer: Elect Christine Quinn Mayor To Annoy Archbishop Dolan

WNYC debuted the premiere episode of King’s County, a Brooklyn-themed variety show hosted by Studio 360′s Kurt Andersen this weekend.

In an effort to “deal with gay stuff,” Mr. Andersen invited on stage New Yorker humorist Paul Rudnick, and as they talked about how pop culture has made the culture at large more accepting of gays.

The conversation veered however to local politics, with Mr. Andersen suggested that “the odds are that here in New York City we are about to have a gay mayor, or a lesbian mayor” (in assertion that the rest of the 2013 field would surely disagree with) and then wondered if a Mayor Quinn “would make the lives of gay people better.”

Mr. Rudnick however gave a full-throated endorsement of the City Council Speaker: Read More

Hakeem Jeffries’ Campaign Denounces David Duke

A spokeswoman for Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries, who is running against Charles Barron in the congressional race in Brooklyn’s 8th District, had harsh words for a video made by KKK Grand Wizard David Duke endorsing Mr. Barron.

“Hate and extreme rhetoric have no place in our society,” Lupe Todd, Mr. Jeffries’ campaign spokeswoman said. “We denounce David Duke’s remarks in its entirety and urge the other candidate in this race to do the same.” Read More

Quinn Endorses Rangel, Citing Support For LGBT Rights

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn backed Charlie Rangel in his tough re-election campaign, lauding the longtime Harlem pol’s reputation as a fighter on the forefront of battling discrimination and supporting equal rights — and LGTB rights in particular.

“Go back and look at the record. Who was one of the first leading African American officials in this country to speak out in full support of marriage quality for the LGBT community? Charlie Rangel. Who has always been there for the LGBT community? Charlie Rangel,” Ms. Quinn said.  The congressman, she added,  was among the guests at her wedding in March to long-time partner Kim Catullo. Forbes for Long

This morning, Wendy Long continued to roll out endorsements in her campaign for the Republican nomination to take on Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. First it was Grover Norquist, and now she added Steve Forbes to the list.

“Wendy would also support a stable dollar that doesn’t swing wildly against gold,” Mr. Forbes said in a somewhat wonky statement. “The last decade of dollar gyrations contributed to the bubbles of recent years and to our continued economic weakness. Wendy will push for a return to sound money and exchange rate stability.” Read More

White House Responds To Colin Powell Saying He’s Not Ready To Endorse Obama Again

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney addressed ex-Secretary of State Colin Powell’s comments that he’s not ready to endorse President Barack Obama again in his daily press briefing today. Mr. Powell, a Republican, broke ranks and announced his support for Mr. Obama in 2008. He said he’s not making an endorsement in this year’s race yet on NBC’s Today this morning.

“I think that the President’s appreciated General Powell’s support four years ago. Obviously, he had served in numerous–several Republican administrations; was a self-identified, I believe, Republican,” Mr. Carney said. “And it’s up to him and every American to decide whom they will support going forward.” Read More

‘Rangel Solidifies Latino Support’

Earlier today, Congressman Charlie Rangel’s reelection campaign touted the support he received from his colleague in the U.S. House, Rep. José Serrano. The announcement, while not a surprise, is the latest chapter in an endorsement war going on between Mr. Rangel and one of his main challengers, State Senator Adriano Espaillat.

“I support Congressman Rangel because he has fought for our community with every fiber of his being,” Mr. Serrano said in a statement that stressed his status as “the most senior Member of Congress of Puerto Rican descent.”  Mr. Espaillat is of Dominican descent and the incumbent’s campaign has previously emphasized its support among Puerto Rican elected officials.
