Gregory Meeks Staffer May Try to Unseat Malcolm Smith

State Sen. Malcolm Smith, arrested and charged last week as part of a wide-ranging bribery scandal, looks like he could have electoral troubles in addition to his legal woes. Jason Hilliard, a long-time staffer to Congressman Gregory Meeks, is actively mulling a  challenge to Mr. Smith, a source close to Hilliard told Politicker.

While Mr. Hilliard declined to discuss his bid, the source said he had been considering the challenge even before last week’s indictment, as he wanted to “enact a more progressive agenda” than Mr. Smith had been advocating. The source addded that Mr. Hilliard “based [the] decision … to serve as a champion” on issues like the standard of living in southeastern Queens. Read More

Attorney Announces Campaign Against Nydia Velázquez

Jeff Kurzon, the managing partner of Manhattan law firm, says he’s ready to run for Congress and challenge  Nydia Velázquez in the Democratic primary next year.

“Hi,” Mr. Kurzon says on his recently-launched campaign website. “My name is Jeff Kurzon. I am a 36 year old attorney and have lived in both ends of District 7: from Bushwick in Brooklyn to Little Italy in Manhattan. I am a proud American with diverse roots ranging from Armenian to English, Irish and Scottish descent. My mother, a former social worker, now runs a small publishing business. My father is a retired physician who served in the U.S. Navy. Lew Fidler Unloads Further on Simcha Felder

Tells us how you really feel, Councilman Lew Fidler.

Mr. Fidler, who yesterday criticized Senator-elect Simcha Felder for vowing to cross party lines and caucus with the Republicans, took another pass this afternoon in a lengthy statement where he demanded Mr. Felder himself answer questions about the decision.

“Simcha is correct that the parties are not a religion, nor should they be,” Mr. Fidler wrote. “But being open and honest with the voters should be.” Read More

Nick Perry Challenger to Formally Announce Tonight

Terry Hinds, an attorney and chair of Community Board 17, will officially declared his candidacy for the State Assembly on Brooklyn45 tonight, an email advertising the television program excitedly announced earlier this evening. Mr. Hinds also confirmed his intentions over Twitter.

The opponent he’s seeking to unseat is veteran Assemblyman Nick Perry, who’s served in his Central Brooklyn Assembly district for almost two decades. It’s not  immediately clear what his campaign platform will be, but the Brooklyn45 email says he will discuss “why he is challenging the incumbent and about some of the needs of the community that he will focus on meeting when he is elected.” Read More
