New Effort to Add ‘Internet Freedom’ to Dem, GOP Platforms

A civil liberties group that helped defeat a bill that opponents said would have strangled the free and open internet are now taking their fight to Tampa and Charlotte.

Demand Progress, which describes itself as a “one million member civil liberties group” announced the launch of a campaign to demand that the  Republican and Democratic Parties “put a commitment to internet freedom in their respective party platforms at the upcoming conventions.”

The group rolled (of course) a website for the campaign: http://voteforthenet.com/  Read More

Bullet Points: How Mayor Mike Is Reshaping The Debate On Guns

Early on a Friday morning last month, a deranged shooter walked into a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., and sprayed enough bullets to injure 58 people and murder 12. A few hours later, Mayor Mike Bloomberg was set to go on his weekly radio hour with 710 AM radio host John Gambling.

No sooner had the host, who has met with the mayor nearly every week at the same hour for the last decade, said “Good morning,” than Mr. Bloomberg, his voice trembling with anger, slammed the nation’s political culture for sitting by while the bodies piled up.

“You know, soothing words are nice, but maybe it’s time that the two people who want to be President of the United States stand up and tell us what they are going to do about it, because this is obviously a problem across the country,” he inveighed. Read More

Mark Levine Racking Up Club Endorsements in Shadow State Senate Race

Mark Levine, a district leader who ran against now-State Senator Adriano Espaillat in 2010 for the seat Eric Schneiderman left behind to become Attorney General, is running for the same seat again this year, and he’s picking up a little steam even as some confusion remains as to whether he’d have pull the plug on his campaign. This is due to the unique circumstances that would allow Mr. Espaillat, now a close ally of Mr. Levine’s, to run for reelection should he fall short in his primary challenge against veteran Rep. Charlie Rangel. Nevertheless, it seems Mr. Levine is plowing ahead.

At a candidate forum in Mr. Espaillat’s congressional race last night, Mr. Levine told us he’s already received the backing of all six Democratic clubs that have endorsed so far: the Chelsea Reform Democratic Club, the Upper West Side’s Ansonia and Park River Democratic Clubs, the Barack Obama Democratic Club in Washington Heights and the Three Parks and Broadway Democratic Clubs on the Upper West Side. Jason Otaño Moves Towards Campaign Against Martin Dilan

Attorney Jason Otaño, who works in Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz’s office and was previously expected to run for term-limited Councilwoman Diana Reyna’s seat in 2013, now looks to be running instead against State Senator Martin Dilan this year. A tipster told The Politicker that Mr. Otaño was running last week, and indeed today he registered a campaign committee for the move.

Mr. Dilan who’s represented his northern Brooklyn district since 2002 and before that served in the City Council, won’t be easy to topple over as he’s a close ally of Brooklyn Democratic leader Vito Lopez and his district contains the core of Mr. Lopez’s electoral influence. Read More

Hedge-Fund Manager Announces Campaign for Senate

Joe Carvin, a wealthy hedge-fund manager and the Rye Town supervisor in Westchester County, announced today he will be entering the Republican primary for New York’s U.S. Senate seat. If he’s successful in the primary, he will be challenging Senator Kirsten Gillibrand in November.

And to prove he’s serious, Mr. Carvin told the Wall Street Journal he will be investing $1 million into his campaign and intends to raise $5 million to $10 million more.

“I have decided to run for the office of U.S. Senate because I believe that our representatives in Washington have provided us with an economic framework that severely undermines our competitive position in the world today,” Mr. Carvin said in a statement to Gannett today. Read More

Dems Tweak Romney By Air

That’s by air, not on air.

New Yorkers should not be alarmed to find a strange aircraft circling the skies overhead today after the Democratic National Committee directed an airplane to fly between the George Washington Bridge and Hoboken with a 175 foot sign that reads: “Bet you 10k Romney’s Out of Touch  Mitts10KBet.com.”  Read More
