Romney Campaign Says ‘Bureaucrats in President Obama’s Government’ Enjoyed ‘Lavish Parties’ While The Middle Class Struggles

The Romney campaign is jumping on reports the General Services Administration may have had widespread issues of wasteful spending and abuse of government funds at its conferences. In response to a comment made by the Republican chair of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Rep. John Mica yesterday that his committee might need to investigate as many as 70 GSA conferences, Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul issued a statement describing the  financial abuses by “bureaucrats in President Obama’s government” as “unacceptable.”

“Middle-class Americans are struggling to make ends meet–but bureaucrats in President Obama’s government have never had it so good. While the country has piled on record levels of debt, millions of taxpayer dollars have been wasted on lavish parties and exclusive retreats. It’s unacceptable, and Americans deserve better from their government,” Ms. Saul said. Read More

Silver Spokesman: James O’Keefe’s Latest Video ‘Doesn’t Even Rise to The Level of A Comic Strip’

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver’s office is not impressed with James O’Keefe’s latest hidden camera video. Mr. O’Keefe, a controversial conservative activist, posed as an executive with a do-nothing company in the clip and met with a pair of union officials in New York asking whether they could use their political connections to help him secure environmental grants for simply digging and re-filling holes in the dirt. The men Mr. O’Keefe spoke to, John Hutchings of the Laborers’ International Union of North America, former assemblyman Ronald Tocci and Mr. Tocci’s brother, Anthony Tocci, describe how they have lobbyists who help them “push our agenda through.” They specifically name several elected officials they claim are friendly to them; Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, Congressmen Eliot Engel and Jerry Nadler and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver. Mr. Silver’s spokesman, Michael Whyland, told us Mr. O’Keefe’s video shouldn’t be treated as serious journalism.

“This is not reporting. This is not journalism. It doesn’t even rise to the level of a comic strip. This is the kind of stuff that gives honest reporters a bad name,” Mr. Whyland said. Read More

John McCain On Obama’s First Term: ‘It’s The Worst Thing I’ve Ever Observed’

Arizona senator and former presidential candidate John McCain blasted President Barack Obama in an appearance on “Michigan’s Morning Show” on WJIM radio today in which he criticized the president’s performance on the economy, described the process that led to “Obamacare” as “the sleaziest” and complained about the lobbyists’ proximity to the White House.

“It’s the worst thing I’ve ever observed and the American people obviously deserved a lot better than what we got today,” Mr. McCain said. Read More

Former Mayor Ed Koch and Congressman Jerrold Nadler denouncing Charles Barron in front of the Museum of Jewish Heritage.

Politicians Gather To Denounce Charles Barron As An ‘Anti-Semite’ And ‘Enemy of the State of Israel’

Former Mayor Ed Koch, Congressman Jerrold Nadler, Councilman David Greenfield, Assemblyman Dov Hikind gathered with several other elected officials in front of the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Battery Park this morning for a press conference billed as an effort “ to Denounce Charles Barron as Enemy of the State of Israel” and the Jewish community. The politicos who showed up at the event where longtime councilman Mr. Barron was branded “hateful,” a “scary monster,” “anti-Semite” and “bigot” also expressed their support for his rival in the congressional race, Hakeem Jeffries.

“What prompted me … speaking of people that just are not familiar with Charles’ record and they just dont know who Charles Barron is, that’s a very scary thing. Right?” asked Councilman Greenfield, who organized the event. “People are not familiar that there’s an individual who’s running, who we all know very well, who is an anti-Semite, who’s a hate-monger and who’s a bigot. I think it’s very important for us to educate the public and let them know who this individual is.” Read More

Estonian President Explains His Twitter Tiff With Paul Krugman

Yesterday evening, Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves made a series of angry posts on Twitter taking issue with a blog post written by the New York Times’ Paul Krugman criticizing Estonia’s economic performance. Many who saw the Twitter spat doubted the account actually belonged to Mr. Ilves, but The Politicker reached out to the Estonian government and received confirmation and a statement from the man himself.

“Yes I send my own tweets,” Mr. Ilves said. “It was a sincere and immediate defense of the major and often difficult efforts of Estonia to deal with the economic crisis and to stick to the rules adopted in the European Union.” Read More

Charles Barron and Hakeem Jeffries Face Off in Contentious Debate

Councilman Charles Barron and Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries, both candidates for an open congressional seat in Brooklyn, don’t really like each other very much. At least, that’s the most obvious impression from a debate between the two Democrats on Inside City Hall last night.

It started off with Mr. Barron calling Mr. Jeffries ”negative and immature” and a “sore loser” over his dismissal of  retiring Congressman Ed Towns’ endorsement. Read More

Bill Clinton, Media Critic

PATERSON, NJ — At a re-election rally for Congressman Bill Pascrell this afternoon, Bill Clinton blamed the current media landscape for controversy over comments he made on Piers Morgan Tonight yesterday defending Mitt Romney’s business background. In his appearance on the show, Mr. Clinton called Mr. Romney’s work with Bain Capital, which has been the subject of several attacks from the Obama campaign, “a good business career.” Mr. Clinton said his statements were inaccurately reported “as if I had virtually endorsed him.”

“I just want to say one thing before we get into the meat of the coconut here,” Mr. Clinton said. “One of the real problems that we have in modern politics today is that, instead of the news being reported, everyone is looking to create a story.” Read More

Keith Olbermann On The Art of the Twitter Feud

After his ouster from Current TV last Friday, Keith Olbermann spent much of the ensuing three days bickering with Twitter users who mocked his firing. Mr. Olbermann also got into an extended discussion with The Politicker about why he thinks Twitter feuds are worth his time and energy. Mr. Olbermann told us Twitter is a way for him to have “batting practice” with detractors and to say thanks to
his “viewer/friends.” Read More
