Governor's councilor apologizes but still thinks Patrick endorsed her

Governor's Councilor Kelly Timilty apologized to Gov. Deval Patrick for using a forged endorsement in a campaign mailing Wednesday, the Boston Globe reports.

Timilty's camp also maintained, however, that it believed it had Patrick's endorsement.

PolitickerMA.com reported Tuesday afternoon that Timilty, a Dedham Democrat, distributed a mailing that featured an endorsement from Patrick (D-Milton) that was phony.

Larry Rasky, the veteran Boston political operative, told the Globe that the campaign made a mistake in the rush up to the election.

"Campaigns move quickly and think like that happen," Rasky, who is representing Timilty, said. "It was a misunderstanding. Somebody moved quickly without running the traps. All I can tell you is it was a terrible mistake, and she conveyed that to the governor."

Despite phony mailer, Timilty wins

Kelly Timilty held on to her 2nd District Governor's Council seat Tuesday, despite news breaking late in the day that her campaign distributed a flyer featuring a forged endorsement from Gov. Deval Patrick.

Timilty, a Dedham Democrat, held off primary challenger Robert Jubinville, of Milton, by 32 percent. The final tally showed Timilty receiving 66 percent of the vote and Jubinville earning 34 percent.

Patrick 'exploring all legal implications' with forged signature on governor's councilor mailer

Gov. Deval Patrick's political committee confirmed Tuesday that the mailing distributed by Governor's Councilor Kelly Timilty's campaign featuring an endorsement from the governor was, in fact, phony and said that it is exploring whether there are legal implications of the forgery.

"The mailing sent out recently by the Timilty campaign was not approved by the Deval Patrick Committee, nor did the governor approve or author the letter that bears his signature" said Liz Morningstar, Executive Director of the Deval Patrick Committee. "The governor has not endorsed any candidate for Governor's Council. The Deval Patrick Committee is exploring all legal implications with respect to this unauthorized mailing."

Patrick appears in Hecht campaign literature

Gov. Deval Patrick has waded into the tight Middlesex County 29th District state House race, throwing his weight behind Jonathan Hecht, the Boston Globe reported Wednesday.

Patrick (D-Milton) appears with Hecht in a picture that is on a campaign flyer Hecht has distributed through the Watertown and Cambridge district. According to the Globe, the campaign material also contains a statement from the governor that reads, "I've known Jon Hecht for many years. He is a progressive Democrat with a long record of advocating for the needs of working families, especially in tough economic times."

The Hecht campaign said that Patrick has not formally endorsed Hecht.

Analysts chime in: How did Patrick do with his speech?

DENVER - A day after Gov. Deval Patrick took the podium in one of the most sought-after speaking slots in politics, a primetime speaking slot at the Democratic National convention, PolitickerMA.com posed the following questions to the Bay State punditocracy: How did he do?

Some thought Patrick lived up to his billing as a speaker with inspirational oratory skills that rival presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama.

"I thought the governor was great," said Dorie Clark, a Boston Democratic strategist. "He was funny, engaged and willing to lay into [presumptive GOP nominee] John McCain when needed."

Steven Grossman, a Boston political consultant former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, agreed. Grossman said Patrick's speech, which chronicled the "American Story" of a generation that provided a better future for its children through hard work, was "poetic" and that Patrick displayed a "commanding presence."

Murray says Patrick did a 'great job'

DENVER -- Lieutenant Gov. Tim Murray applauded Gov. Deval Patrick’s Primetime speech late Monday night, saying that Patrick did his duty by pointing out contrasts with McCain and reinforcing presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama’s message of change.

“I thought he did a great job,” Murray (D-Worcester) told PolitickerMA.com. “Certainly he’s sought after and probably will be even more so after tonight.”

Asked about Patrick's (D-Milton) willingness to go after presumptive Republican nominee John McCain (Ariz.), a common theme throughout the convention Tuesday night, Murray said pointed out the differences between the two presumptive nominees is critical to Democrats’ chances in November.

Mass. GOP slams Patrick speech for being 'Hollywood'

DENVER -- The Massachusetts Republican Party took a page out of the national GOP’s playbook Monday night, criticizing Gov. Deval Patrick’s primetime speech as all sparkle and no substance.

In a statement, Massachusetts GOP Chairman Peter Torkildsen tied Patrick (D-Milton) to presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama (Ill.) and leveled the same charge against Patrick that the Republican National Committee and their presumptive nominee, U.S. Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), has at aimed at Obama.

“Tonight, Deval Patrick spoke in Denver, but he might have well as spoken in Hollywood,” Torkildsen said, “because what he talked about had no basis in reality and no relation to his own dismal record of broken promises.”
