McDermott considers impeachment

Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Seattle), the long-serving 7th District U.S. Congressman, made remarks on the House floor this morning in favor of the impeachment of President George W. Bush. He said that, after a long struggle with the implication of one of the House's "gravest" decisions,  he was signing onto a resolution to consider the impeachment of President Bush based on evidence from three new books by Ron Suskind, Vincent Bugliosi and Bob Woodward.

McDermott spokesman Mike DeCesare said Rep. McDermott would not speculate as to whether or not he thought the call for impeachment would be widespread among Democrats, and did not think it would hurt Democrats' electoral chances in the fall.

McDermott sticks up for poor, predicts rough campaign season

DENVER - Seattle Congressman Jim McDermott addressed the Washington delegation this morning with a speech focused on the less fortunate members of society. He was introduced by Democratic Party Chair Dwight Pelz, who said McDermott was "never at a loss for words or principles." The representative acted true to form, saying right off the bat that, with Barack Obama, Democrats "are putting [their] best foot forward as Americans when we are in the tank."

He then went after Republicans for their anti-immigration sentiment, accusing them of trying to hold back the future, which in a few decades will see a majority of Americans as people of color. He said America's diversity is what makes it great, and "Barack is the next iteration of that greatness."

State's congressional delegation applauds GAO protest decision

Washington's full delegation, with the exception of Rep. Brian Baird (D-Vancouver) spoke out on the Government Accountability Office's decision today to uphold the protest against the decision making process that led to a US Air Force tanker contract to go to Airbus over Boeing earlier this year.

The group unanimously celebrated the GAO's decision because of initial unfairness in the decision making process, and used their statements as an I-told-you-so to those who supported and helped usher the deal through.

"It has been clear all along that the process was flawed, as evidenced by the clear recommendations made by the GAO," said Rep. Dave Reichert (R-Auburn). "This is a great victory for Boeing, Washington state and every American who values our nation's economic and homeland security."

Superdelegate McDonald will wait until May 31 DNC meeting to endorse

One of Washington's undecided slate of Democratic National Committee superdelegates, David McDonald, spoke to the press about his status today, but only to announce that he would not be throwing his superdelegate weight around until after the May 31 meeting of the DNC rules committee. That meeting will decide how to seat the delegations from Florida and Michigan who were penalized for moving their primaries earlier than DNC rules allowed.

McDonald is on the DNC's rules and bylaws committee that initially voted to strip Florida's and Michigan's delegates as a punishment. It was a move that McDonald supported. He told The Olympian today that he hoped to reserve the appearance of impartiality prior to that meeting.
