Republicans debate in 2nd District

Salem — Four Republican 2nd Congressional District candidates participated in a relatively civil question-and-answer forum before a small group of people at Salem High School Thursday night.

The forum opened with two minute remarks from Jim Steiner (R-Concord), Bob Clegg (R-Hudson), Jennifer Horn (R-Nashua) and Grant Bosse (R-Hillsborough) who are challenging to unseat incumbent U.S. Rep. Paul Hodes (D-Concord).

There was no audience participation and the forum — sponsored by the Salem Chamber of Commerce and broadcast on public access television — did not allow candidates to directly question each other.

The four were asked about issues ranging from a timetable for withdrawal of troops in Iraq, if the economic stimulus was helpful to New Hampshire residents, and their proposals for health care policies.

Good thing campaigns have gone green

It is a real good thing that press releases are now done via email and no longer by fax.  If this was 2000 a lot of innocent trees would have been killed for no good reason with a few of the endorsements we have seen recently.

Endorsements are usually great for a press release, but have little to no impact on a campaign.  An exception could be if a popular Governor got involved in a primary. But, what about when the only 1-term governor in the last 80 years endorses your candidacy? John Stephen was lucky enough to have that happen with the support of Craig Benson.

Then there is the case of the former governor who is deceased so his wife makes the endorsement. Bob Clegg was fortunate enough to pick up this endorsement when Gail Thompson endorsed his candidacy last week.

And now we have Jennifer Horn getting involved in the “I’m trying to make news, but this is the best I got” category as she announced today that Jim Coburn (you remember him right, 26% in 2006) will co-chair the efforts of her campaign.

All of these candidates will make the argument that those who follow these endorsers represent the heart of the party and they will vote in September.  That may be true, but those who are most involved in the process are also the ones who will make up their mind individually. The White Mountain National forest is the true winner in these endorsements as the trees are saved a very unworthy death.

Thomson endorses Clegg

Gal Thomson, wife of former Gov. Mel Thomson, has endorsed state Sen. Bob Clegg (R-Hudson) in the 2nd Congressional District primary.

"Low taxes are the result of low spending. That was my husband's mantra," Thomson said in a press release. "Bob Clegg has worked for the last 20 years at the local and state level with exactly that philosophy and that's why I am supporting his candidacy."

Bosse, Horn fight continues in debate

Republican debate: Photo credit: PolitickerNH.comNASHUA-The rivalry between Grant Bosse (R-Hillsboro) and Jennifer Horn (R-Nashua) took center stage in a Republican debate at Nashua's City Hall.

Discussing gun rights, Bosse used a quote from Politico to criticize Horn. In the article Horn was quoted as saying she favored "common-sense restrictions to protect kids from guns," a quote that Horn says is wrong.
