Pindell Report: Wash. has most competitive gubernatorial, House races in country

Washington State voters will participate in the nation's most competitive gubernatorial race and congressional races in the country, a new Politicker.com analysis shows.

Races in The Pindell Report are ranked in order of how close the vote is expected to be on Election Day. It should come as no surprise that the Washington governor's race, a rematch from 2004 that went into three recounts, would be among those at the top. But this race is not just about the past. Polls heading into the fall suggest this race is too close to call. Republicans haven't held the governorship here since 1980.

"This time the race is squarely about the performance of Democratic Gov. Christine Gregoire," said Politicker.com Managing Editor James Pindell.

DGA plays role in anti-Rossi group

The Democratic Governors Association, a Washington, DC-based organization dedicated to supporting Democratic incumbent governors and challengers, is one of the main groups behind today’s launch of an independent group attacking Washington State Republican gubernatorial candidate Dino Rossi.

The group Evergreen Progress says on its website that the DGA is among its top five contributors. A spokesman for the DGA confirmed that it had given Evergreen Progress $250,000.

As PolitickerWA.com’s Bryan Bissell reports, the three hard-hitting television advertisements Evergreen Progress have begun airing, focusing on Rossi’s record on children's health care, prescription drugs and a patient's bill of rights. Rossi, a former state Senator, is challenging Democratic incumbent Christine Gregoire after a narrow loss in 2004.
