Hoyer and Van Hollen to speak at national convention

Democrats Steny Hoyer and Chris Van Hollen have been chosen to speak at the Democratic National Convention in Denver next week. The two U.S. Representatives will be the only two members of either major party’s Maryland delegation to be speaking at either party's national convention.

Details regarding Tuesday’s speeches at the Democratic convention are still unclear. However, the evening’s theme will focus on “renewing America’s promise” and a statement confirms the gist of Van Hollen’s speech will be geared towards rising stars in Congress.

Democrats have high profile fundraisers

By the end of the week, Seattle will have been host to two prominent Democratic fundraising events. The Seattle P-I reports that Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), the U.S. House Majority Leader, stopped by yesterday on behalf of 8th District Democrat Darcy Burner.

At the event Hoyer bragged of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's financial advantage and how that will help the Democrats increase their majority by electing candidates like Burner, and hopefully Idaho Democrat Walt Minnick and Alaska Democrat Ethan Berkowitz, both of whom were also graced by Hoyer's presence on his westward swing.

This Saturday Barack Obama will have a fundraising event at a Seattle art gallery hosted by Grey's Anatomy stars Ellen Pompeo and Justin Chambers and Obama LGBT vote director Dave Noble. The New York Times reports that the fundie will be $250 a head, or $10,000 to be an event chair.

Hoyer disappointed over Boehner's 'hang Pelosi' comment, calls for apology

Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D) and Minority Leader John Boehner (R)U.S. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Mechanicsville) registered his displeasure over the comments of his Republican counterpart, Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio), suggesting violence against Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for now allowing a vote on offshore drilling for oil.

Boehner made the offending remark in an Aug. 8 interview with Politico, discussing some 80 House Republicans continuing protest demanding that Speaker Pelosi bring the body back from summer recess to vote on offshore oil drilling.

When asked about an idea floating around that Pelosi call a special session only to vote on issues like childrens' health insurance and other Democratic agenda items, Boehner became indignant.

Why not Collins Bailey?

Truth is, 'Strangebedfellows' was neither -- it was typical and it was partisan, and it will not have the intended impact.

Marking Nixon's resignation, 'moneybombers' aim at Hoyer for FISA compromise

U.S. Rep. Steny HoyerA coalition of U.S. Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tex.) supporters and leading liberal bloggers are unleashing a "Moneybomb" on Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Mechanicsville) and two other Democratic U.S. House members today in an effort to punish them for supporting the Foreign Intelligence and Surveillance Act compromise earlier this summer.

The group, 'Strangebedfellows,' is comprised of BreakTheMatrix.com bloggers Trevor Lyman and Rick Williams, who organized huge online fundraising days for Paul's Republican presidential candidacy, have teamed up with the Democratic-leaning Glenn Greenwald of Salon.com and Jane Hamsher of firedoglake.com on this issue they share a passion for. U.S.

Paul's online fundraising had already raised eyebrows in political circles when Lyman, largely independent of the campaign, organized a single day push that raised $4.2 million from more than 37,000 contributors in about 24 hours. He scheduled it on Nov. 5, 2007 to coincide with Guy Fawkes' Day, famous for the plot to blowup Great Britain's Parliament that day in 1605. On Dec. 16, 2007, the same day as the Boston Tea Party, they set a new record with $6.04 million.

The group chose Aug. 8 for the big push because it's the anniversary of President Richard Nixon's 1974 resignation for "his lawbreaking and surveillance abuses."

National rumblings for Boswell camp as fundraiser with Ford and Hoyer in planning stages

After being omitted from two rounds of television ad buys by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the campaign of state Sen. David Boswell (D-Owensboro) is finally rallying some national attention for their efforts in the 2nd Congressional District race.

According to campaign advisor Jim Cole, a fundraiser hosted by former governor and U.S. Sen. Wendell Ford (D-Owensboro) and U.S. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Maryland) is in the works for Boswell.

Ford currently holds the record as Kentucky's longest serving U.S. senator, having held that office for four terms until his retirement in 1998, while Hoyer packs his own fundraising punch as the second-ranking U.S. House Democrat.

Boswell is aiming to end a fourteen-year Republican hold on the 2nd District, which is open after current incumbent U.S. Rep. Ron Lewis (R-Cecilia) announced his retirement in January.

Not on the list, but on his mind

Prominent political observer Stu Rothenberg put out his latest House rankings on Tuesday, and yet again, the 1st District was not on his list of competitive races -- meaning it's safe for the incumbent party and its nominee, Andy Harris.

But that doesn't mean Rothenberg hasn't noticed Democratic challenger Frank Kratovil.

U.S. Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Mechanicsville) is criticizing President Bush and Congressional Republicans for what he calls “the Administration's fiscal recklessness,The Politico reports

“Today’s budget projections by OMB are simply further evidence that the Bush Administration is the most fiscally irresponsible Administration in American history,” Hoyer said in a statement.

The U.S. House majority leader continued: “Let no one be mistaken: The vast majority of this record deficit is attributable to policies enacted by the former Republican Majorities in Congress and signed into law by President Bush.”

According to The Politico, the Bush administration released a revised estimate of next year’s budget deficit on Monday. The new estimate puts the deficit at roughly $482 billion for next year. The Bush administration pointed to a slowing economy and stimulus checks for the record breaking projection.
