Chair baby chair? Steele hasn't mentioned it says spokeswoman

Recent rumors suggest former Lt. Gov. Michael Steele (R-Prince George's County)  -- the current chair of GOPAC -- may have his sights on the Republican National Committee's chairmanship, but a spokeswoman for Steele says the rumors are coming from the mouths of others, not Steele himself.

"He hasn't talked about it," Belinda Cook, GOPAC's special assistant to the chairman, told PolitickerMD.com. Cook says Steele has been focusing on getting John McCain elected and hasn't mentioned the idea.

Steele: Ehrlich, mood on ground would influence bid for governor

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Former Lt. Gov. Michael Steele says he has not ruled out the idea of running for Governor in 2010.

In addition to his family and "situations on the ground," Steele said the mindset of voters would play a crucial role in his eventual decision.

"No one wants to run for an office and be a punching bag for the other side," Steele told PolitickerMD.com. "If Marylanders are ready to take it up a notch and do something a little bit different then we'll take a look at it."

Steele: Nov. 4 is an opportunity for GOP

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. - Former Maryland Lt. Governor Michael Steele said this year's presidential election represents an opportunity for Republicans nationwide to re-establish the party's brand and make it stronger.

"John McCain affords us that opportunity," said Steele, speaking to the California delegation to the Republican National Convention at a breakfast event. "We're family, we're community, we're Republicans."

Steele convention address remains fluid with schedule

ST. PAUL, Minn. – For Maryland’s former lieutenant governor, the shifting schedule of the Republican National Convention means that he’s stuck waiting to see where his speaking slot might bounce next.

Michael Steele was originally scheduled to speak on Tuesday evening as the last speaker before primetime. He was then moved to Monday.

Because of the changes to the convention’s fluid schedule, Steele will now make his address on Tuesday at 9:50 p.m. Eastern time.

The Club For Growth plays the race card on Michael Steele

So, the Club For Growth is peeved that "the party's most steadfast elected economic conservatives" will not have prominent speaking roles at the Republican National Committee Convention in two weeks. No surprise there -- the Club is always goading their party in one way or the other.

"With the Republican Party’s brand in shambles, it is important for the Party to showcase those leaders who are currently in office fighting to preserve the limited-government, free-market principles the GOP used to stand for," the release said.

But they probably should have stopped themselves there.

Steele to speak at Republican convention

Former Lt. Gov. Michael Steele: Politicker PhotoFormer Lt. Gov. Michael Steele is scheduled to speak at the Republican National Convention. Details regarding the theme of Steele’s Tuesday speech are still unclear, but the night’s theme will be “reform.”

Steele is the last speaker on a night that includes former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge.

Steele has been an active surrogate for McCain in recent weeks. The former Lt. Governor has even had his name kicked around as a potential running mate for McCain.

“This invitation demonstrates that Michael Steele is a recognized leader of the Republican Party, and carries with him the full faith and confidence of other Republican leaders to excite the base of the party and help carry it to victory in November,” said Andrew Langer, the Eastern Shore coordinator for the McCain campaign.
