State senator responds to false endorsement charge, points to new website

State Sen. Dianne Wilkerson's campaign responded on Wednesday to charges that her campaign website still listed endorsements she has lost since Sonia Chang-Diaz beat her in the Democratic primary, saying the website was only for the primary and pointing to a new general election website.

The old website also no longer works.

On Monday, Hillary Chabot of the Boston Herald noted that Wilkerson's campaign website, www.DianneDelivers2008.com, still listed endorsements from Gov. Deval Patrick, House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi and state Senate President Therese Murray even though they are now backing Chang-Diaz.

In a statement made to PolitickerMA.com, Jeff Ross, a spokesman for Wilkerson, said that website was only used for the primary.

"There was an old web site that was the prior web-site. We have a new web site focused on information relevant and necessary leading up to Nov. 4, 2008 in our write in sticker campaign," Ross said.

Coakley, Therese Murray cast votes for Clinton

DENVER -- State Sen. President Therese Murray and Attorney General Martha Coakley cast votes for U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton Wednesday morning, PolitickerMA.com has learned.

Murray (D-Plymouth) is a delegate for Massachusetts and Coakley (D-Medford) a superdelegate. Both endorsed Clinton (D-N.Y.) in the presidential primary and both cast their votes following the Massachusetts delegation morning breakfast Wednesday.

Asked what they thought of Clinton’s speech last night, Murray raved about the performance. “Oh I don’t think you’ll ever find anyone who can give a more eloquent speech,” she told PolitickerMA.com.

Mass. Democrats, including Clinton backers, preach unity at first breakfast

DENVER -- Just as Chairman John Walsh predicted earlier, prominent Massachusetts Democrats, including several who supported U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton during the primary season, stressed coming together to create a united front in their support of presumptive nominee Barack Obama at their first delegation breakfast Monday morning.

In his opening remarks, Walsh empathized with women in the delegation that supported Clinton by acknowledging that "for too many years Massachusetts has lagged behind in electing women Democrats."

In particular, though, Walsh commended U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas (D-Lowell) for her 2007 special election win. (He also thanked her for wearing out her Republican opponent, Jim Ogonowski, to the point that "he was too exhausted to collect enough signatures to run for the Senate" this year.) Walsh added that he is looking forward to seeing more women elected Democratic officials in Massachusetts.

National popular vote bill on hold, for now

BOSTON - As state legislators made their way through the marathon conclusion of the legislative session last week, one measure that quietly slipped through the cracks was a bill that would reform the Electoral College so the president would be elected by a popular vote.

Last Thursday night, as the midnight deadline drew closer, the measure was passed out the Senate and sent to the House of Representatives. It passed out of the House as well, but had to return to the Senate to be enacted, at which point it would have been sent to the governor. The bill stalled in the Senate as it fell in line behind votes on several bond bills.

If the legislature had passed the bill and Patrick signed it, Massachusetts would have become the fifth state to back the measure, joining Hawaii, Illinois, New Jersey, and Maryland. In order for the measure to have a practical impact, it would have to be enacted by states whose electoral college votes, when combined, equals at least 270, enough to elect a president. The electoral votes of the four states that have already passed the measure add up to 50.

This Week's Massachusetts 'Winners and Losers'

"Put it all on red, Mr. Romney?"Even if the repeal of the 1913 out-of-state wedlock law turns Massachusetts into "the Las Vegas of gay marriage" as Mitt Romney once said, at $45 million, he's still the highest-stakes gambler of them all.

Murray refuses to strip Marzilli of chairmanship

The Boston Herald reported Tuesday that state Senate President Therese Murray (D-Plymouth) has denied Minority Whip Bob Hedlund's (D-Weymouth) call to strip embattled state Sen. James Marzilli (D-Arlington) of his chairmanship of the Tourism, Arts and Cultural Development Committee.

PolitickerMA.com reported Monday that Hedlund sent Murray a letter that called on the Senate president to remove Marzilli from the chairmanship. As a chairman, Marzilli receives a $7,500 stipend.

"The Senate has a process in place through its Committee on Ethics and Rules to discipline a senator if and when a legal matter is resolved," said Murray spokesman David Falcone, Murray's spokesman, told the Herald.

Guessing game

What does it say about how the education reform package will do when people like Therese Murray and Robert DeLeo don't know enough about it to comment?

Is this a case of Deval Patrick failing to reach out or Murray, DeLeo and others fence-sitting?
