Harris greets voters, receives mixed reactions

ABINGTON -- Republican Andy Harris received mixed reviews while greeting voters at Abingdon Elementary School in Harford County on Tuesday.

Harris, who said most of his volunteers were phone baking, stood alone in front of the Elementary School wearing an American flag tie and a smile. Harris greeted nearly everyone who passed, asking them to send him to Congress.

"Thanks for coming out to vote!" Harris said to a woman. "I'm Andy Harris. I'm gonna ask for your vote. Send me to Congress," he told another.

Most passing by simply nodded, smiled and kept walking. Some shook his hand. Others seemed reluctant to greet him.

After Harris asked one woman for her vote, she said "we'll see," and kept walking.

High turnout on Kratovil's home turf

STEVENSVILLE -- Turnout is high in Queen Anne's County, Frank Kratovil's home county, according to at least one poll worker there.

Around 8:30am on Tuesday, Matapeake Elementary School in Stevensville was clocking in at about 3 votes a minute, according to one poll worker, adding it was certainly a lot busier than previous years.

With hours left, Harris picks up the phone

Andy Harris

SALISBURY -- With just hours until Election Day, Republican Andy Harris is spending the little time he has left campaigning to get out the vote.

Harris spent Monday phone banking and waving signs throughout the district. He said he made roughly 100 phone calls and was flattered when people asked, "Is this really you?"

However, the process does have its low points. "Sometimes I think they think it's a robocall and they hang up," Harris told PolitickerMD.com at the Salisbury state GOP HQ.

Washington Times endorses Harris

Republican Andy Harris received a last minute endorsement from The Washington Times on Monday.

Harris, a state Senator from Cockeysville, is currently running a heated campaign against Queen Anne's County state's Attorney Frank Kratovil (D) for Maryland's 1st Congressional District seat.

The Washington Times blasted Kratovil, challenging his moderate brand and praised Harris's "staunch" conservative credentials.

Battleground Cecil

Maryland's 1st Congressional District race could be decided by the roughly 60,000 voters in Cecil County.

While Republican Andy Harris can claim the Western Shore as his stronghold and Democrat Frank Kratovil the Eastern Shore, Cecil County remains a toss-up with just about 2,000 more registered Democrats than Republicans.

That's not to say both candidates don't have their vulnerabilities. Observers point to Queen Anne's County and Anne Arundel County as competitive, but none as unpredictable as Cecil.

Hoyer stumps for Kratovil: 'Ladies and gentleman, we're ahead'

SEVERNA PARK -- House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Mechanicsville) stayed on message Sunday while stumping for Democrat Frank Kratovil.

"Ladies and gentleman, we're ahead," Hoyer told a crowd of roughly 70 volunteers at a Democratic Party HQ in Anne Arundel County.

Hoyer praised the 1st Congressional District's current occupant, U.S. Rep. Wayne Gilchrest (R-Kennedyville), caliing him "one of the most considered, conscientious, intellectually honest Representatives with whom I've served."

Kratovil's opponent, state Sen. Andy Harris (R-Cockeysville), defeated Gilchrest in the February primary, but Gilchrest endorsed Kratovil over the summer.

Hoyer criticized Harris's temperment and called his television ads "junk."

Harris glad to have Obama's name on the ballot

PASADENA -- Republican Andy Harris said Sunday that his only fear going into Election Day is that conservatives won't turnout, but added having Barack Obama's name on the ballot would make that an unlikely scenario.

"I think given the fear over an Obama presidency, I think that's gonna turnout conservative voters," Harris told PolitickerMD.com at the Pasadena parade at Tick Neck Park. "They're not gonna vote for the Obama-Kratovil team."

Ehrlich: MD-1 outcome would impact decision to run for Gov.

Bob Ehrlich

PASADENA -- Former Gov. Bob Ehrlich (R-Baltimore) said Sunday that the outcome of the 1st Congressional District race would influence his decision to run for governor in 2010.

"It's an element. It's just one of many, but it is certainly relevant," Ehrlich told PolitickerMD.com at the Pasadena parade at Tick Neck Park.

Harris, a state Senator from Cockeysville, is currently running against Democrat Frank Kratovil for Maryland's 1st District seat. Ehrlich said this year's Democratic wave has impacted the race, but was confident Harris would prevail anyway. "I have private polling and I have Harris campaign polling ... obviously we're ahead," Ehrlich said. "It's closer than it otherwise would be because it's a tough year for Republicans."

Harris sticks by charges, says he's the one being attacked

PASADENA -- Republican Andy Harris is sticking by his latest attacks against Democrat Frank Kratovil's ethics as a state prosecutor, claiming he's the one being attacked.

"There have been attacks going against me for the last seven weeks and now everyone's just concentrating on these quote, 'latest attacks'," Harris told PolitickerMD.com at the GOP phone banking headquarters in Pasadena. "I actually haven't done attacks you see they have $2 million attacking me over the past seven weeks all of them aggressive."

Kratovil: My positive message will prevail over Harris's attacks

MAYS CHAPEL -- Democrat Frank Kratovil said his opponent's latest attacks are out of line, but clearly reflect his political character.

"I think people are very, very tired of the kind of politics that he engages in including these robocalls," Kratovil told PolitickerMD.com on Saturday, in reference to robocalls the Harris campaign sent out Wednesday night, charging Kratovil for letting a child sex offender go free. "It doesn't get much worse than what he's doing."
