As Obama pushes faith-based initiative, he vows return trips to SE Ohio

ZANESVILLE, Ohio -- U.S. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) toured the Eastside Community Ministry earlier on Tuesday before announcing his new plan to expand federal faith-based charity initiatives, loosely modeled on President Bush's programs of the past eight years.

But Obama admitted he hasn't been in this area of Ohio enough but said he's competitive against U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).

Clinton vets give advice on how Obama can win Ohio

Bill Clinton was the last Democratic presidential candidate to carry Ohio and the first since FDR to win it twice.

Three men that helped Clinton win Ohio in 1992 spoke to PolitickerOH.com about what Barack Obama must do to win the state. Their advice varies regarding tactics and regions but they all practically say "Go southeast, young man" to Appalachian Ohio where Hillary Clinton routed him in the primary.

Could Arizona really be in play?

Most would say with John McCain as the nominee, Arizona should not be in play in November. According to a recent web presentation by McCain campaign manager Rick Davis, that may not be the case. Arizona is counted as a swing state for McCain. In the last 50 years Arizona has voted for a total of one Democratic presidential candidate over a Republican. In 1996 Bill Clinton defeated Bob Dole by 2% in Arizona. Every other election has been in favor of the Republican. Then when you consider John McCain has never had a close U.S. Senate race, it would make sense if Arizona was a firm red state for McCain. If McCain needs to spend time shoring up Arizona, it could be a long November for both McCain and Republicans throughout the state.

Menendez on eve of McCain rally: If Obama frames the issues, he wins

On the flight to Puerto Rico, Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) turned to former President Bill Clinton and told him one of the reasons his wife was losing was because the campaign too often allowed Sen. Barack Obama to frame the issues.

When Clinton ran in the 1990s, he stayed on message - most famously with his "it’s the economy, stupid" rundown of the first President Bush. He won, Menendez observed, because Clinton forced his opponent to respond to the issues on his terms.

A flummoxed Bush was left marveling at supermarket product scanning devices while Clinton told voters, "I feel your pain."

Sixteen years later, his wife didn’t capture the issues and present them aggressively enough, in Menendez’s view, and she suffered the consequences.

Now, as he shifts gears from Clinton to Obama, Menendez is on the offensive, trying to frame the immigration and ethics debates against Sen. John McCain, a day before the presumptive Republican presidential nominee lands in New Jersey for a Burlington County campaign rally.

Bill Clinton backs out of UCLA speech

Former President Bill Clinton has cancelled his Friday commencement speech at the University of California at Los Angeles, his office announced today.

The decision apparently stems from an ongoing labor dispute between the school and American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

"Due to the ongoing labor dispute, he regrets that he will be unable to participate in commencement this year and he wishes the UCLA graduates the best of luck," Clinton's office said.

The AP has more on the story.
