President Barack Obama, whose performance in his first debate against Mitt Romney was widely panned, appears to be very pleased Vice President Joe Biden’s rhetorical bout tonight went significantly more smoothly than his own.

On his way back from a campaign stop in Florida, Mr. Obama descended the stairs of Air Force One and addressed the reporters who “hollered” at him, according to a pool report tonight.

Well, the vice presidential debate between Joe Biden and Paul Ryan started off with a bit of a bang. In her opening question, moderator Martha Raddatz asked Mr. Biden whether President Barack Obama’s administration responded properly in its controversial reaction to the attacks on the U.S. embassy in Libya. After calling it a “tragedy” and vowing to hunt down those responsible, Mr. Biden directly went after Mitt Romney.

“When you’re looking at a president, Martha, it seems to me that you should look at his most important responsibility, that’s caring for the national security of the country, and the best way to do that is to take a look at how he’s handled the issues of the day.”

Mr. Biden went on to praise the president for the military operation that resulted in the death of Osama bin Laden and suggested Mitt Romney would not have killed the Al Qaeda leader.

President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign is out with yet another fundraising email this afternoon, but the latest one–themed on tonight’s vice presidential debate–is a little more pessimistic than usual. It’s entitled, “How elections are lost.”

In the email itself, Mr. Obama’s campaign manager Jim Messina said the lack of campaign dollars to respond to Congressman Paul Ryan’s debate arguments could lead to a Mitt Romney victory on Election Day.

Vice President Joe Biden will be facing off against Congressman Paul Ryan in their one and only debate tonight, and high anticipation has led to much speculation about the rhetorical tactics the two candidates will employ. Some of that speculation has included the thought that Mr. Biden will employ a “rope-a-dope” strategy, in which, in a game of psychological warfare, a debater initially adopts a losing position before rallying back to a win.

Asked about this possibility today at the New Castle Airport in Delaware, Mr. Biden quipped, “You ever see me rope-a-dope?”

Mitt Romney Says Joe Biden Has the Edge in Vice Presidential Debate

While President Barack Obama’s campaign is touting Vice President Joe Biden’s debate skills, promising a “forceful and compelling” performance, Mr. Obama’s Republican rival is going in the opposite direction. In an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer last night, Mitt Romney said his running mate, Paul Ryan, shouldn’t be expected to dominate.

“I don’t know how Paul will deal with this debate. Obviously the vice president has done, I don’t know, 15 or 20 debates during his lifetime,” Mr. Romney said when asked what viewers can expect, labeling the incumbent vice president an “experienced debater.”

Vice President Joe Biden hasn’t had much in the way of media exposure since he came out for gay marriage in May. However, President Barack Obama’s representatives say the American people can expect an “exceptional spokesman” for the president to take the debate stage Thursday night when Mr. Biden faces off against his Republican counterpart Paul Ryan.

“There is a–there really is–it really is the case that the Vice President is an exceptional spokesman for the principles that are the foundation of the President’s policies when it comes to his economic agenda and the need to build our economy from the middle out,” Mr. Obama’s press secretary Jay Carney said on the campaign airplane earlier today, according to an official transcript.

Although Democrats carpet bombed reporters’ inboxes yesterday with press releases slamming Mitt Romney’s vice presidential selection, it turns out that there isn’t complete unanimity among the party’s candidates when it comes to Paul Ryan. To wit, former Councilman Simcha Felder, a Democrat running for the State Senate in a heavily Orthodox Jewish district in southern Brooklyn, sent out a press release this afternoon embracing Mr. Ryan.

“Paul Ryan is a terrific pick for Vice President,” Mr. Felder said in the statement. “As Chairman of the Budget Committee he brings tremendous knowledge of fiscal policy and will be an asset to a Romney administration.”
