There’s a Bunch of Elections Thursday, Which Ones Should You Care About?

It’s Election Day in New York next Thursday! But instead of a titanic battle between ideologies–your Mitt Romneys vs. Barack Obamas, if you will–the options on the ballot will be little-noticed state legislative contests between candidates of the same party, often with few policy differences.

However, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t some exciting races happening. From “Who Gets Arrested for Raping a Grandmother?” to “Assemblywoman Caught Up in Sex Scandal with Two Young Men,” there’s been no shortage of nasty drama and mud slinging as voters head to the polls.

Here’s a breakdown of who’s running and why it might matter who wins. The list below focuses on Democratic races because the few Republican primaries in this staunchly blue city tend to have clear favorites or are taking place in such Democratic territory that the victor is reasonably likely to be irrelevant. Yet Another Candidate Files Against Boyland Jr.

The field against Assemblyman William Boyland Jr., who’s currently facing his second set of federal corruption charges in less than a year, continues to grow and grow. The latest aspiring Assemblyman for the 55th Assembly District is Dion Turner, a public school teacher.

Mr. Turner joins community activists Tony Herbert and Anthony Jones, as well as Nathan Bradley, the Deputy Chief of Staff to Senator John Sampson, and the incumbent himself. Even more candidates could be waiting in the wings. Read More

Field to Take on Boyland Jr. Officially Grows Even Larger

This morning The Politicker reported a new challenger, Anthony Jones, had officially registered a committee for the race against indicted Assemblyman William Boyland Jr. This afternoon, another candidate has filed for the seat: Nathan Bradley, Deputy Chief of Staff to Senator John Sampson.

This brings the total number of candidates running for the seat to four: Community Activists Tony Herbert & Mr. Jones, Mr. Bradley and, of course, the incumbent himself. Read More

Race to Replace Boyland Jr. Officially Grows

The race for Assemblyman William Boyland Jr.’s seat got a bit more crowded last week when Anthony Jones filed a committee for the campaign. Mr. Boyland’s political future is currently very much in doubt as he’s infamously facing his second set of federal corruption charges.

Mr. Jones, who has worked on a host of other campaigns in Central Brooklyn, said he’s been plotting a run for office ever since he was a teenager. He describes himself as “a kid who was involved in all types of bad things when he was 14, put up in a lock-up facility, and turned his life around.” Read More
