The three-minute video features Mr. Obama making the announcement, followed mostly young Latin women speaking emotionally about how much the appointment meant to them.

Polls show Mr. Obama leading Republican rival Mitt Romney by as much as 35 points among Latino voters, but I can't recall a sitting president making such an explicit campaign appeal over a Supreme Court appointment before, a testament to how much Ms. Sotomayor means to a key demographic group.

During an interview with the editorial board of the Des Moines Register today, Texas Governor Rick Perry was unable to recall the name of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and incorrectly stated the number of judges in the nation's highest court. Governor Perry's pair of Supreme slipups came as he gave his opinions on the separation of church and state.

Earlier this week, Governor Perry released an ad in which he accused the Obama administration of conducting a "war on religion." When the Register editors asked him to explain this comment, Governor Perry pointed to the two justices appointed by President Obama as examples of the White House attack on faith--however, he couldn't remember both of their names.

"When you see his appointment of two, from my perspective, inarguably activist judges whether it was," Governor Perry trailed off.  "Noto--Montemayor."

"Sonia Sotomayor?" asked one of the editors.

"Sotomayor--Sotomayor and Kagan who are both activist judges," Governor Perry corrected himself.

The Governor went on to discuss his belief that local school boards should decide whether to allow prayer in their classrooms rather than the "eight unelected and frankly unaccountable judges" in the Supreme Court. Of course, there are actually nine justices in the court.
