Former Congressman Anthony Weiner accused Mayor Michael Bloomberg of using school closures to skirt union rules and fudging test scores ahead of his 2005 re-election bid during a conversation on education policy this morning that represented a rare reprieve from relentless questions about his latest sexing scandal.

Still trying to shift the conversation away from revelations that have engulfed his fledgling mayoral campaign in recent weeks, Mr. Weiner spent nearly an hour discussing everything from test scores to classroom diversity during a CUNY Institute of Education Policy Breakfast at Hunter College.

Anthony Weiner tried to clear the air Friday evening, giving a whirlwind round of interviews to various local news outlets. Free of the chaotic press scrums that have dominated his mayoral campaign since his latest sexting revelations, Mr. Weiner pushed his interviewers to turn the page on the scandal.

It was awkward.

“Are you a narcissist?” PIX11’s Mario Diaz asked Mr. Weiner in his interview’s opening question. Mr. Weiner replied that he likes to get in front of crowds, adding, “I’m sure there are a lot of people like that in television news, too.”

Anthony Weiner isn’t going to quit the mayor’s race because this is New York.

“I know that there are newspaper editors and other politicians that say, ‘Boy, I wish that guy Weiner would quit,'” Mr. Weiner says in a new ad posted on his campaign website. “They don’t know New York. They certainly don’t know me. ‘Quit’ isn’t the way we roll in New York City.”

It may finally be Public Advocate Bill de Blasio’s time in the spotlight.

Mr. de Blasio, who has recently received favorable write-ups in Salon and the New York Times, took his pitch to MSNBC’s Morning Joe this morning to plug his progressive credentials and tout yesterday’s surge in the polls while–of course–being asked questions about former Congressman Anthony Weiner’s latest sexting scandal.

As the city’s Democratic establishment rallies against ex-Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s comptroller candidacy, it turns out there’s something they can both agree on: Anthony Weiner shouldn’t be mayor.

Mr. Spitzer, who’s tried his very best up until now to avoid commenting on his fellow scandal-scarred pol, was cajoled into weighing into the race on MSNBC’s Hardball this evening.

Anthony Weiner’s candidacy is continuing to drop in the wake of revelations that he continued sexting random women long after he resigned from Congress, a new poll out this afternoon confirms. And that’s good news for his Democratic rivals, including Public Advocate Bill de Blasio.

The latest Quinnipiac University numbers show Mr. Weiner trailing the pack in fourth place, with the support of just 16 percent of the likely Democratic voters–a huge slide from his front-runner status just a month ago. And the majority of voters–53 percent–now think he should drop out of the race.
