Salgado and Carrión Unite Ahead of Primary Election

It’s unusual enough to see mayoral candidates campaigning together the day before a heated primary. It’s even rarer when they belong to different political parties.

But that’s exactly what happened on the steps of City Hall today as several candidates made a last-ditch effort to boost Latino turnout, resulting in the temporary union of Democratic mayoral candidate Rev. Erick Salgado and the Independence Party’s pick in the race, ex-Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrión.

With Spanish-language media clustered around the eclectic cast of supporters–the cowboy hat-wearing State Senator Rubén Díaz Sr., one of Mr. Salgado’s most prominent backers, stood with Assemblyman José Rivera, a small slate of City Council candidates and the Hot 97 DJ L Boogs–the various politicians mixed English and Spanish in an effort to galvanize Latino voters.

“We know that there is a sleeping giant in New York. It is the Latino community,” said Mr. Carrión. “They represent the dreams and aspirations and desires of the immigrant communities that keep coming here.” Continue reading “Salgado and Carrión Unite Ahead of Primary Election”

A Mayoral Campaign Fueled by the Religious, Conservative Wing of the NYC Democratic Party

As the old saying goes, politics makes strange bedfellows, and that is certainly true in this year’s mayoral election. One dark-horse candidate is being backed by an alliance made from an odd coupling of religious Jews and Evangelical Christian Latinos to support his socially conservative yet resolutely Democratic agenda. In a city—and a mayoral race—where even Republicans tend to be socially liberal, a religious, right-wing Democrat is certainly a novelty. But Pastor Erick Salgado would like to be more than that. Mr. Salgado, who lives in Staten Island and claims his Iglesia Jovenes Cristianos, or Churdch of the Young Christians, now has “around twenty” congregations “in the New York area,” said Jews and Christians with conservative religious beliefs have been denied “the respect that they deserve” from the city’s dominant political party.

“We are Democrats; we don’t want to do this in another party, we want to do this here in this one,” he explained to Politicker when we spoke with him last week in a small campaign office a few blocks from one of his churches in Bath Beach Continue reading “A Mayoral Campaign Fueled by the Religious, Conservative Wing of the NYC Democratic Party”

There Is No Love Lost Between Senator Ruben Diaz and Gerson Borrero

The latest edition of State Senator Ruben Diaz’s periodic “What You Should Know” email columns contained an attack against Gerson Borrero, a NY1 contributor and columnist for the Spanish-language newspaper El Diario. In his email, Mr. Diaz accused Mr. Borrero of lying about him, having a “deep obsession” with him and even “trying to imitate my dressing style.”

“There are some people who, when they fall in love or feel envious, may easily feel rejected. Any real or perceived rejection could bring them to the edge of absurdity. Sometimes they even become liars,” Mr. Diaz wrote. “This seems to be true in the case of Mr. Gerson Borrero, a reporter, who has issues with me. If you read or hear Mr. Borrero’s writings or commentaries about me, you might think this individual has a deep obsession with me.”

Mr. Borrero had some harsh words of his own for Mr. Diaz when Politicker called him to discuss the column this morning.

“I’m not particularly obsessed with him like he suggests,” said Mr. Borrero. “I’m definitely not enamored with him. I don’t like him, I’ve never had such bad taste. I think he’s an ugly person, not physically, he is an ugly human being. I think he is Lucifer personified.” Continue reading “There Is No Love Lost Between Senator Ruben Diaz and Gerson Borrero”

State Senator Ruben Diaz sent a special New Year’s-themed edition of his regular “What You Should Know” email newsletters this morning. In his year-end missive, Mr. Diaz took a series of shots at the State Senate with backhanded “political wishes” for the new IDC/GOP leadership coalition, “Uncle Tom” State Senator Malcolm Smith and State Senator Adriano Espaillat.  Continue reading “Ruben Diaz Rings in the New Year With Jabs at the State Senate and ‘Uncle Tom’ Malcolm Smith”

State Senator Ruben Diaz Sr., infamous for sending out somewhat odd “What You Should Know” statements, has another one out this afternoon, and it’s a good one.

For example, the statement, which is about The New York Timesreport that Governor Cuomo solicited casino contributions for an independent group that advocates on his behalf at the same time he was pushing for casino legalization in the state, references Caesar, feces, and “some kind of celestial beings” before the first paragraph is through.

It can be viewed below:
