West Side Congressman Jerry Nadler is fuming mad about the federal farm bill, which cuts billions from food stamp benefits.

Mr. Nadler, not known as a rhetorical bomb-thrower, used some unusually harsh language Sunday against Republicans lawmakers, charging they “want people to starve” by forcing “immoral” and “disgusting” cuts on hungry families.  Continue reading “Jerry Nadler Says Republicans Pushing for Food Stamp Cuts ‘Just Want People to Starve’”

Upper East Side residents trying to halt the city’s construction of a new waste transfer station made a last-minute push today for Republican Joe Lhota, with just days to go before voters head to the polls.

The Republican candidate kicked off a day of campaigning outside of Asphalt Green, a recreation center on East 91st Street–the site of a controversial marine waste transfer station, which his rival, Bill de Blasio, supports.

Although he condemns his party’s federal representatives for the partial government shutdown currently gripping Washington, Republican mayoral candidate Joe Lhota today endorsed one of their top demands: delaying the individual health care mandate.

“It should be delayed for one year,” Mr. Lhota flatly said this morning in a WNYC radio interview with Brian Lehrer.  Continue reading “Joe Lhota Backs Obamacare Delay”

Republican mayoral candidate Joe Lhota brushed off brutal early polling numbers that show him badly trailing Bill de Blasio as he campaigned this morning on the Upper East Side.

After an hour of glad-handing, fist pumping, high-fiving little kids–and even a paw shake–Mr. Lhota told reporters that he’s unfazed by the first poll of the general election, which gave him just 22 percent support to Mr. de Blasio’s 65 percent.

“Look, I have always known right from the beginning that I was going to be the underdog,” the former deputy mayor said outside the 77th Street/Lexington Avenue subway station, rejecting the notion that the gulf was too wide to bridge. “Nothing’s insurmountable … you’ll see my numbers rise. I have no doubt about it.”

Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani joined the campaign trail today, making a final push for his former deputy mayor, Joe Lhota, and threatening doom and gloom if a Democrat is elected in November.

Standing in Mr. Lhota’s campaign headquarters near Grand Central station this morning, Mr. Giuliani praised Mr. Lhota as the only candidate qualified to be mayor, comparing the current Democratic field to former Public Advocate Mark Green, who would have taken over if anything had happened to him when he was mayor.
