Cardinal Timothy Dolan, though jubilant about Mayor Bill de Blasio’s desire to expand universal prekindergarten across the city, stopped short today of endorsing his plan to hike taxes to fund the program.

Appearing with Mr. de Blasio in the Bronx to promote the Catholic Church’s partnership on the pre-K expansion, Mr. Dolan refused to specifically back Mr. de Blasio’s plan to raise taxes on the city’s wealthiest residents to fund pre-K and after-school programs. Bill de Blasio Takes His Pre-K Case to Albany Once Again

With less than a month to go until the state budget deadline, Mayor Bill de Blasio returned to Albany for the fourth time since his election to press his case to lawmakers reticent to let the city raise taxes on the wealthiest residents to fund universal pre-K.

De Blasio Digs In Heels on Tax-the-Rich Plan Before Cuomo Budget Address

Mayor Bill de Blasio today doubled down on his signature plan to tax the rich to fund universal pre-K, even as Gov. Andrew Cuomo is expected to roll out an alternative funding stream in his annual budget address this afternoon.

Taking questions after a press conference announcing two new appointments, Mr. de Blasio said he would continue to push for his tax increase, even if the governor provides all the money the mayor says he needs through an alternate funding stream.
