Sun: Porter taking lead on national tourism funding

U.S. Rep. Jon PorterThe Las Vegas Sun ran a story in Sunday's paper detailing U.S. Rep. Jon Porter's (R-Henderson) efforts to create a government fund to promote U.S. tourism abroad.

The paper noted that Porter has led a spirited charge to marshall support for tourism since taking over as co-chair of the U.S. House Travel and Tourism caucus early last year.

A key source of economic activity in Porter's Las Vegas-area district, tourism has been sluggish in recent months thanks to the rising cost of gasoline and flagging attendance at area casinos.

A key source of economic activity in Porter's Las Vegas-area district, tourism has been sluggish in recent months thanks to the rising cost of gasoline and flagging attendance at area casinos.

But the Sun reports that Porter and his House colleagues hope to increase the government's marketing efforts abroad by creating a private/public entity with funds of up to $200 million a year. The public money could come from a $10 fee imposed on international travellers visiting the country without a visa, and would be matched by private contributions from the travel and tourism industries.

Porter's Democratic colleague, U.S. Rep. Shelley Berkley, has also lent her support to a bill creating the fund, and U.S. Sens. Harry Reid (D) and John Ensign (R) are working on similar legislation in the Senate, the Sun reports.

Porter, a three-term Congressman, is running for reelection in a competitive race with state Sen. Dina Titus (D-Henderson).
