Democrat Hannah-Beth Jackson conceded defeat in SD-19 to Republican Tony Strickland on Wednesday, bringing to an end an often heated, extended battle for the southern Central Coast senate seat.
"We need to definitely do whatever we can to reach across party lines to fix the problems of the state," Strickland, 38, told the Ventura County Star in this story.
With the latest totals showing Strickland hanging on to the lead by a little over 900 votes.
Jackson, 58, admitted to the paper that a win was no longer mathematically possible.
"I'm disappointed, but I think that it's pretty clear at this point in time, we're not going to be able to catch up," she said.
The latest results from the Secretary of State's office reflected that Strickland had secured 207,745 votes to Jackson's 206,842, an edge of 903 votes.
Like all newly elected state lawmakers, Strickland is scheduled to take the oath of office on Monday in Sacramento.
