The campaign of state Sen. Steve Stivers (R-Columbus) sent a release Tuesday touting the official results from the Madison County Board of Elections in the race for Ohio's 15th Congressional District.
Stivers and his opponent, Franklin Co. Commissioner Mary Jo Kilroy (D-Columbus), are awaiting the official vote tallies in their race to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Deborah Pryce (R-Columbus).
The Stivers camp said that the Madison County totals resulted in a net gain of 115 additional votes for Stivers in the race.
The campaign said that with the vote total in Union County also finalized, Stivers now leads Kilroy by 594 votes in the race. Stivers' camp said that since election night, and with well over 15,000 additional votes counted since, Stivers has never trailed in the race.
The Kilroy campaign said it was also pleased with the result coming out of Madison County.
"We're very happy with the numbers that we've seen, actually," said Kilroy spokesman Brad Bauman. "We think it's very good news for the campaign. [Stivers] underperformed in both Madison and Union Counties, where he needed to have a blowout."
Bauman said that the numbers that Stivers has picked up don't come close to what he'll need "compared to what we're going to pick up in Franklin."
Bauman said that with 27,000 provisional ballots left to be counted in Franklin County, he expects Kilroy to end up winning the race. Bauman pointed to Kilroy's challenge to Pryce in 2006, when he said there were 20,000 provisional ballots in Franklin, and Kilroy was down by 3,500 votes before they were counted, compared to 1,000 after they were counted.
