U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz (D-Abington) was appointed vice-chair of a group of moderate House Democrats Tuesday, her office announced.
The New Democrat Coalition is made up of 71 House Democrats who describe themselves as center-leaning. It is chaired by U.S. Rep. Ellen Tauscher (D-Calif.).
The leadership role could prove politically useful to Schwartz should she decide to make good on rumors that she is considering a 2010 Senate run against Republican incumbent Arlen Specter. Schwartz has given no public indication that she will do so, but her name is high on the list of potential Democratic candidates. Positioning herself closer to the center would be critical against the historically moderate Specter.
"Solving the major challenges before us requires innovation and a willingness to think boldly," Schwartz said in a statement. "NewDems are committed to these principles, and I look forward to working with all my colleagues as we put forth solutions on the major issues facing American families."
