Sanders admits to 'tyrant' comments

Washington State Supreme Court Justice Richard Sanders

Adam Wilson of The Olympian has been following the saga of whether or not Washington State Supreme Court Justice Richard Sanders heckled U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey at a recent Federalist Society dinner with calls of "tyrant" during Mukasey’s speech.

The story was first picked up on conservative blogs, and Sanders initially gave a cryptic denial of the events. But as rumors of the story persisted, Wilson checked back in with Sanders for a more detailed explanation.

Tuesday Sanders set the record straight, admitting that he had said the words.

Sanders describes a scene where Mukrasey began speaking about a justification of Bush administration policies that he disagreed with regarding torture at Guantanamo Bay, and the Justice felt compelled to speak his mind.

"The program provided no opportunity for questions or response, and I felt compelled to speak out," Sanders told Wilson. "I stood up, and said, 'tyrant,' and then left the meeting. No one else said anything."
