Arlen Specter, Pennsylvania's senior U.S. Senator and the ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee, told MSNBC that the Obama transition team did not give him a heads up about its apparent decision to nominate Eric Holder as Attorney General.
"There has been no outreach," Specter said Tuesday. "I saw a news release on it a few minutes ago."
Specter said it was "too soon for me to say" whether he would support Holder's confirmation, but he indicated that the former Clinton administration's official role in the controversial pardon of Marc Rich "would be a factor to consider."
"I'd have to take a much closer look at his record and talk to him and think about it," Specter said. If Obama wants his Attorney General nominee to be easily confirmed with bipartisan support, Specter will be a key lawmaker to win over.
