Quinnipiac poll: Obama trails McCain on Russia in national poll

A new national poll from Quinnipiac University released Tuesday shows that 55 percent of likely voters feel that Republican presidential candidate John McCain is better qualified than Democrat Barack Obama to deal with Russia. According to the survey, conducted Aug. 12-17, McCain rails Obama 47 percent to 42 percent. A July 15 from Quinnipiac showed Obama with a 50 percent to 41 percent lead over McCain, the presumptive GOP nominee.

In the race for the White House, the poll shows that McCain leads among men, 46 percent to 41 percent; among white voters, 48 percent to 40 percent; and among Evangelical Christians, 65 percent to 25 percent.

Obama, meanwhile, leads among women voters, 53 percent to 39 percent; among black voters, 94 percent to 4 percent; and among voters age 18 to 34, 55 percent to 36 percent. Obama support among voters age 35 to 54 has increased since the July poll, 49 percent to 41 percent. McCain leads among voters age 55 and up, 47 percent to 40 percent.

Independent voters are leaning more toward Obama, 45 percent to 39 percent.
