Pittsburgh cartoonist put off by pro-choice convention giveaways

(click to enlarge)Anyone who has ever gone to a political convention knows that swag definitely isn't in short supply.

But even Pittsburgh Post-Gazette cartoonist Rob Rogers was amazed when he came across a unique giveaway just before a delegation breakfast; a can by the pro-choice group NARAL labeled, "Yes We CAN!"

"The terrible pun wasn't lost on me," Rogers said on his blog.

Rob Roger's thoughts about NARAL's swag. (click for original)Rob Roger's thoughts about NARAL's swag. (click for original)According to the Pittsburgh cartoonist, "there was a pro-choice game booklet inside, pro-choice buttons and a pro-choice beer bottle opener."

"I am not making this up," he continued. "Inside the "fun games" booklet there were crosswords, jumbles, a connect-the-dot game and a maze where you had to find your way out of John McCain's reproductive policies."

NARAL bragged about their choice in convention giveaways on their blog, where they said they "may be a little nerdy about their swag-love, but they can't help it!"

Also included in the can is a bottle opener, a pro-choice delegate button, and a pro-Obama window decal, all of which rubbed Rogers the wrong way.

"Look, I am totally in favor of a woman's right to choose, but when is anything that has to do with abortion fun? "

"And what were they thinking with that bottle opener," Rogers said. "Do they think a pregnant woman is saying to herself, "Hmmm, this is probably the most personal, serious and emotional decision about my body I will ever have to make ... it's Miller time!"

LOL, I think it's

LOL, I think it's funny...and a great way to get out the word! Great advertising! Kudos to the one who came up with the idea. Pro Lifers need to CHIIIIILLLLLL.

Chill? For serious?

Joking about abortion is just creepy. Not going to end the world, but still creepy. The tasteless puns, bizarrely cheerful game books - it's all just weird.

Pro-lifers (like me) think that abortion takes someone who is alive and makes him/her dead. Even pro-choicers are pro-abortion because of the heinous life that they think bearing a child would cause for the mother and/or child. They don't compare it to a happy fun picnic day; they compare it to removing a cancer.

Ha ha! I guess you're right. That's a real knee-slapper right there.

08/28/08 4:55 pm

Pretty sick

It was a pro-choice person that thought it was disgusting. But yeah, murder isn't fun, but the NARAL people obviously think so. This is the DNC's view of "reaching across the table" to pro-lifers. A "pro-lifer" who works with Obama is pro-abortion, period.

I clicked for the original, didn't see it.

Please fix the link.

It's clear that the

It's clear that the Pittsburgh cartoonist doesn't get that this is just a little bit of fun at the expense of the Pro-life agenda. It's kitsch with a message, nothing more. To make more out of it is to make a mountain out of a mole-hill.

08/28/08 5:17 pm

Yeah, real funny.

Funny? Sure it's funny.

If you think murder for the sake of convenience is funny, then it's downright hilarious.

Kind of like breast cancer, anorexia, or forced prostitution is funny. I laugh at stuff like that all the time.

Now who needs to chill?

08/28/08 5:24 pm

Very sad

No, abortion is not funny. Sadder still is the response from Lynx55...

"Pro Lifers need to CHIIIIILLLLLL"

"Chill" while babies are dying un-necessarily? And with such a cavalier attitude? I don't think so.

08/28/08 5:27 pm

Hey, kill any babies today,

Hey, kill any babies today, a$$hat?

How many more babies have to die to quench your blood thirst?

08/28/08 5:30 pm

Show one - for REAL sometime!

If they think it's so damn funny than show a real abortion - on national TV!

We'll all have a real laugh won't we liberals?

Maybe we can show a partial birth abortion so we can see the babies head and then see the doctor stick a tube into it's skull and sucks its brains out.

When people really see the actual act of the abortion it won't be so funny anymore!

Laugh it up liberals, you're a despicable lot!

When she finally regains consciousness and tries to speak, her doctor leans over to hear her sigh contently and to feebly ask, ‘Where is that marvelous ape?’

"he wants to repeal Roe v.

"he wants to repeal Roe v. Wade"...
This is the problem with letting kids lead the adults. You must be one of the Obama yutes. An adult with any life experience knows that Roe v Wade is a court case and not a law. It cannot be repealed.

What is so ironic in your statement is that conservatives wish it WAS a law. At least then the PEOPLE decided it was legal (not judges) and the PEOPLE would be able to decide it is illegal. If you believe in democracy like you leftists all claim to, then you should be against Roe v Wade and let the PEOPLE vote in each state to decide whether to allow abortion, income taxes, eminent domain, and other mandates that come down from SCOTUS.

What's the old oldage - better to look like a fool than to open your mouth and prove it.

Pro-lifers are absurd

Embryos and fetuses are not babies. It is funny to make fun of pro-lifers, because they turn something as basic as a procedure to stop a pregnancy into something as ridiculously dishonest and simplistic as "baby-killing."

They do while ignoring the fact that criminilizing abortion does nothing to reduce the occurence of abortions, but does increase the health risks of the women who get them illegally.

And if that wasn't enough, pro-lifers also usually oppose comprehensive sex education, easy access to contraception and other things that actually DO decrease the number of abortions.

What can you do besides laugh at them?

08/28/08 8:23 pm

Sick, creepy and downright wrong

This shows just how sick the left is these days. Killing children, why that's just fun and games for them. No wonder the "One" argued to let children die should they survive an abortion, and no wonder he thinks children are "punishment". It's sick, creepy, and just downright wrong. That must be why liberals love abortion so much.

08/28/08 8:59 pm

Well, at least our tax

Well, at least our tax dollars didnt go to NARAl, the way $300 million a year goes to Planned Parenthood (which showed profit for their "services")

08/28/08 11:47 pm

This shows just how lightly

This shows just how lightly the pro-aborts taking the matter of child-killing. Better to not have much to do with these people.

08/28/08 11:49 pm

I guess the best way to

I guess the best way to address the abortion issue is to trivialize it. Maybe we should invent a 'Sponge Bob Abortion Pants character' and show it in pre-k. As much as it disgusts me, it becomes a better commercial for the pro-life folks. How about selling aborted babies in those little machines at supermarkets like pet rocks? The cuteness factor would win the nation over!!!

08/29/08 12:02 am

Ironic

These people that use the term, "mass of cells" now say that it isn't a baby, it's a fetus! Big difference! The ONLY difference is that a fetus is a baby in utero. It's just not outside the womb, yet. That's it. It has a heartbeat (at 8 weeks!) right about the time most women find out they're pregnant. But if a woman wants to go through that, whatever- it's her choice.

Gotta love this "right to choose" crap, though. Everyone has a right to choose. Choose what? What they mean to say is women have rights to kill their fetuses (i.e. baby in utero).

Making light of the subject is wrong, not just because of the act itself, but what about the millions of women who have severe psychological problems after having had an abortion? These women who made well informed and fully cognizant decisions who are now on anti-depressents/anti-anxiety meds.

This stuff makes fun of them, nevermind having no regard for a fetus- as if it's unimportant until it actually breathes oxygen.

However, the irony isn't lost on me to know that alot of these people shouted at the rooftops to NOT kill Tookie Williams, because the death penalty is wrong. As is torturing terrorists that cut off "infidels" heads on Al-Jezeera. It's wrong to waterboard people.

But go ahead and kill your unborn babies...I mean fetuses (defined by Merriam Webster as a developing human).

Amendment 48

I don't see how a pro-Obama sticker or pro-choice button attempts to make abortion fun.

But nevermind that, as the fact is that Colorado faces a very, very huge threat from the anti-abortionists this election in the form of Amendment 48 If it passes, that measure would give fertilized eggs all the legal rights of persons.

The Coalition for Secular Government (http://www.seculargovernment.us) just published an issue paper on it "Amendment 48 Is Anti-Life: Why It Matters That a Fertilized Egg Is Not a Person" by Ari Armstrong and myself. It's available at:

http://www.seculargovernment.us/docs/a48.pdf

We discuss some of the serious implications of this proposed amendment, including its effects on the legality of abortion, birth control, and in vitro fertilization. And we offer a strong defense of abortion rights based on the biological facts of pregnancy.

Repeal or reverse, the end

Repeal or reverse, the end effect is still the same. You know what the author meant. There is no need to get nit-picky.

Regarding conservatives wishing it was a law , I find that interesting. Laws are passed by our elected legislators, not by the people. Our judges are also either elected (depending on your state) or appointed by said elected legislators or elected state/federal executives. Regardless of the manner, the outcome is the same.

With our current government structure, if you want the "PEOPLE" to REVERSE Roe v. Wade, you'll need to get your elected representatives to approve a federal amendment which will need to be ratified by a large majority of the states. Even then, the "PEOPLE" (you and I) will have no direct hand in reversing the ruling.

We live in a federal republic, not a democracy. FYI and stuff. The ideal of some kind of national popular vote ruling this country is not a reality at this time. We are, as simple citizens, at least one step removed from the governing processes of our country. We don't even elect our President directly; it is actually selected by the electoral college.

So U-Ra-Ra pro-lifers! I'm afraid you have a lot more work to do than getting upset at a pro-choice bottle opener (no one said it would be used only for alcohol or given only to pregnant women...is it also possible the enthusiasm implied in the swag was actually referring to Obama (the "Yes we CAN!" slogan) vs. abortions? I think so.) and should actually start putting an emotionally stable and rational case before our elected representatives, candidates, and fellow voters.

Opener?

Not just 'fun' bad taste - doesn't it occur to anyone that the 'opener' is a metaphor for opening a woman's body to release her from the parasite she's carrying?

This is way beyond disgusting.

Embryos and fetuses are not

Embryos and fetuses are not babies.

Hey a$$hat, when was the last time you asked a pregnant friend... "How is your embryo doing?"

08/30/08 11:49 am

Reply to "Pro Lifers are Absurd"

The fertilized egg at the time of conception contains all the DNA necessary to produce a HUMAN BABY. There is no point in the 9 month wait where one has to add a little more sperm or more egg in order to make these fertilized cells become human. All that is needed is time ( 9 months) and nutrition. Of course thse embryos are human babies! I've never known a human pregnancy yet that produced another species.
