About the Race

Long time political observers may note that it would take a perfect storm for Democrats to have a chance of ever winning Virginia. That might be so and the perfect storm might actually be taking place.

Virginia hasn't voted for a Republican presidential candidate since 1964. But in the past two decades the state as been creeping more Democratic, particularly due to population increases in Northern Virginia. The demographic changes, according to University of Virginia professor Larry Sabato, means that Virginia should be viewed as a Mid-Atlantic state and not as a Southern state.

But besides the Democratic changes up north, there is the rest of the political environment. The state is getting more comfortable voting Democratic. The last two governors have been Democrats and in 2006 Democrat Jim Webb pulled off a surprising upset against incumbent Republican George Allen for the U.S. Senate. Also helping Obama here is the fact that former Gov. Mark Warner is spending millions of his own money to get turnout up in his Senate race this fall.

McCain will be aided in the Southern parts of the state and Eastern part with its number of military facilities.

While Virginia still feels like a state that will pull once again Republican there is enough of a wave to push back and make the state, for now, stuck in the middle.
