2008 Candidates

Tom Feeney (R)

Congressman

Suzanne Kosmas (D)

State Representative

About the Race

CANDIDATES: Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Feeney is seeking a fourth term. The Democratic candidates are former state Rep. Suzanne Kosmas and the former nominee Clint Curtis. The primary is Aug. 26. Feeney carried the seat with 58 percent of the vote in 2006. George W. Bush won the district in 2004 with 57 percent.

RACE PROFILE: All signs point to this race becoming increasingly competitive. Kosmas is running an aggressive bid against Feeney, who has held the seat, which includes Titusville, New Smyrna Beach and areas near Winter Park, for three terms. In July, Kosmas' campaign announced that she had raised $475,000 in second-quarter funds and had about $925,000 in cash on hand, giving her a $130,000 edge over the incumbent. Kosmas is also pushing hard on alleged ties that Feeney had to now-jailed lobbyist Jack Abramoff. But this district has proven itself to be a conservative one -- with Feeney taking 58 percent in his 2006 reelection bid and Bush winning 55 percent in the district in 2004. For now Feeney maintains a slight edge.

ANALYSIS: It’s never good when your first campaign ad is an apology and yet that’s exactly what Feeney did. Enough said. This race becomes Leans Democrat.

Kosmas Can Not Defeat Feeney

Despite what the political establishment says about Kosmas and her bankroll being able to defeat Feeney - she can not do it. Recent polls show her nearly 20 points behind Feeney in a district that leans republican +3. Kosmas has similiar corruption issues likie Feeney and with them being the two candidates in the race - Feeney will keep his seat. The best we can hope for is that Clint Curtis (who you barely recognize in your article) will defeat Kosmas in the primary. The money raised by Kosmas is coming from the national party and its' PAC's along with out of district special interest groups. She is just another example of a millionaire politican that will sell her vote for a political contribution. That is not sitting well with the democratic primary voters inside the district. After all they are the ones that will decide who their candidate will be in the November election - not the DCCC or special interest groups from around the country.
