About the Race

RACE PROFILE: Democrats love to talk about their chances of picking up this Canton-area seat, which Ralph Regula is retiring from after having served 18 consecutive terms. John Boccieri, a first-term state senator and former minority whip in the state House, is a strong Democratic candidate and Kirk Schuring, a two-term state senator and former state representative, appears to be something of a flawed candidate. After defeating primary opponent Matt Miller, Schuring flopped while addressing the crowd at an Ashland County rally for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, U.S. Sen. John McCain. But this is a conservative district as Bush racked up a large margin of victory here in 2004. Boccieri, who was heavily recruited by national Democrats, will have the well-funded Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's support.
