About the Race

Republican John Barrasso, a Yale-educated doctor, was appointed to the U.S. Senate in 2007 to replace Craig Thomas, who died in office. Wyoming hasn't elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1970 or one to the House since 1976.

August 20, 2008 - 7:18 am — Safe Republican — #28

The Democratic Primary race to take on Barrasso was extremely tight in yesterday's primary. In fact, heading into midnight both candidates had 50 percent of the vote.

But in the end former state Senator Keith Goodenough wasn't good enough. Lawyer Nick Carter beat him by 306 votes.

August 15, 2008 - 6:28 pm — Safe Republican — #28

An Aug. 15 editorial published in the Wyoming Star-Tribune suggests that Carter is the best Democrat to take on Barrasso -- but regardless of who the challenger is, Barrasso will be a tough nut to crack: "Carter may lack political experience, but he has a wealth of knowledge about the issues, some good ideas and a definite passion for the job," the editorial reads. "He has knocked on a lot of doors throughout Wyoming, and he's eager for the challenge of taking on Barrasso. Democratic voters should give him that chance."
