Even a Democratic poll in June showed Republican U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts up by 12 points over the likely Democratic opponent, former U.S. Rep. Jim Slattery. In 1996, Roberts won by 60 percent of the vote.

The Kansas City Star is reporting on another attempt from a Democratic candidate to connect a Republican incumbent to the Bush administration. This time around, Slattery is accusing Roberts of intentionally delaying an investigation into the events that lead up to the Iraq war.

A recent Rasmussen poll shows that Roberts' lead over Slattery is definitely shrinking -- but Slattery still has to overcome a 19-percent gap in order to catch up with the incumbent. This poll also marks the second month in a row in which Roberts has maintained above the 50 percent threshold.
