Partriot Majority extends into Ohio, hits Chabot in new TV spot

Patriot Majority, a left-leaning advocacy group, is extending its reach into Ohio, going up on the air today with a new television advertisement sharply criticizing Republican Rep. Steve Chabot (R-Cincinnati) on the issue of gas prices.

The organization, whose entry into the 2008 campaign playing field was first reported by the Washington Post last week, has already gone on the air in the Midwest region with a spot hitting Republican Rep. Tim Walberg (R-Michigan).

“It’s a shame. Gas prices are hurting Ohio. But our Congressman is part of the problem in Washington,” an announcer says in the new 30-second spot. “We’re struggling to meet rising food costs and sky-high gas prices. But instead of helping us, Congressman Chabot supported tax hikes for oil companies – not once, not twice, but five times. Chabot voted for billions in special tax breaks for oil companies even though they’re making record profits.”

The ad concludes with a screen image of President Bush and Vice President Cheney. “Tell Steve Chabot to stop siding with big oil companies and big oil men,” the announcer says.

Patriot Majority has purchased about $250,000 in advertising time to air the spot in the Cincinnati area over the next several weeks. Patriot Majority President Craig Varoga characterized the Chabot spot as “the second wave in an extended ad buy.” He did not specify which other races Patriot Majority would jump into, but said, “We will continue to extend the number of campaigns in which we are airing issue ads.”

The organization’s advertisement focusing on Chabot, like its spot targeting Walberg, is being funded by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME).

Chabot’s campaign did not immediately return a call requesting comment.

Democrats are zeroing in on Chabot’s 1st Congressional District seat, with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee reserving over $900,000 in advertising time in the district. Chabot, a seven-term incumbent, is facing a race for re-election against state Rep. Steve Driehaus (D-Price Hill).
